As a child we were told that the actual worth of our bodies was about $4.50. Accounting for inflation and price rises over half a century we are all now worth about $160.00 depending on our weight. Donald Trump’s claim that he is worth over ten billion dollars works just fine in the minds of those to whom the American Dream is calculated in dollars. Hero worship is a base compunction among those who could not spot character and other redeeming qualities without changing the premise of their world view. In the realm of Christian apologetics and sound theology, a world view is a supreme test of how a man, or a crowd, discerns what success is, and is generally what drives most people to make the decisions they do. We love to repeat the adage that when you die regardless of how much you are worth – “you can’t take it with you.” This adage is so immutably true that it includes the $160.00 worth of flesh that we carry around from day to day. How much is Donald Trump worth? You do the math. Just as in politics we have what is known as “Republican in name only,” Christianity has what we call “Christians in name only,” for which we might use the acronym CINO’s. CINO’s might be good church goers, but very poor disciples. They may have a general belief in God, but have only enough Biblical knowledge to make an eclectically driven Bible quote now and then, to serve the idea that they are part of the fold. They are not “bad” people, but they do make up what might also be referred to as “Christianity Lite.” They are called “Evangelicals,” but that doesn’t mean much today. They are about 60 million strong, but may be the weakest social force in America today because they do not choose to be wholly guided by the moral and spiritual principles of the Bible. In fact, the Barna Group says that only 40 percent of those in this group use the Bible as the absolute guide to morality. They are largely indifferent about politics and some of them voted for Barack Obama in the previous elections of 2008 and 2012. These are the CINO’s that are more likely to care that Trump is not PC (politically correct) than if he is not BA (born again.) Likewise, this is the crowd least likely not to question the source of Donald Trump’s wealth. Is it the meek and lowly Jesus who said “Blessed are the poor” or is it the god of this world (Satan) who claims outright that he gives both the power and the wealth of this present world to anyone he chooses. (Luke 4: 5-6) Obviously, Trump credits himself alone for his success in business, but in a world under the sway of the lord of mis-rule this is a common error. The winners under this deception are very often the greatest losers in the world, but how few are seeing that. Because what Ted Cruz said about NYC liberalism and values is largely true, Trump has held his primary rally in Buffalo. Gaffes abounded, like referring to the attack of the Twin Towers as 7/11, but the worst is that the tight control the police maintained in Buffalo would have been impossible in NYC, where Trump is not fully accepted by any stretch of the imagination. At the Buffalo meeting there were rivers of sycophantic, slobbering and gushing, all of which raised memories of the line from the song used to introduce the fondly remembered show “Happy Days” with actor Ron Howard - “How can it be wrong if it feels so right.” Trump may have insulted virtually every person in the world who does not support him, but he is completely impotent to insult cold hard facts. The fact is that the “billionaire” is only worth about $160.00, but that won’t keep him from spending a great deal his 10 billion to buy the Republican nomination in 2016. This writer attaches no dollar amount to the search for a candidate. He may be a pauper or a rich man; it only matters if he is presidential. Sorry Donald – you don’t even come close, even with the help of Matt Drudge, Sean Hannity and others. I expect few to none to understand my transference of a theological premise to a purely political occurrence, but it begs to be acknowledged. When Christ was gathering chosen people to be his followers he was asked by one of them if they could follow him after they buried their recently deceased father. His reply was amazing. “But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.” (Mt 8: 22) The CINO’s indifference to Trump’s lack of intelligence, character and presidential qualities is the moral equivalent of saying – let the dead elect the dead. If they are successful it will take four to eight long years for them to come to the realization that the living will also be led by the dead.
