2. CBT and depression
March 22, 2018

Please note that this is a "follow-on" article. It is best read after my articles "Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Negative Core Beliefs (NCBs) - Causes" and "Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Negative Core Beliefs (NCBs) - Identification". What can be done about Negative Core Beliefs? There are several options open to a CBT Therapist, but in my experience as a Psychiatrist and Therapist in Brighton I find that the following method is particularly effective. Firstly, the method is to challenge these Negative Core Beliefs, in much the same way that CBT therapists would c... (read more)

3. The link between CBT and anger
March 22, 2018

The basic hypothesis of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is that our emotions are greatly influenced by our cognitions. Or, put in plain English, "we feel what we think". Anger is, of course, a very common emotion and as such is not necessarily a problem. Getting angry occasionally can be entirely appropriate - I think we can all empathise with people who are angry because their car's been stolen or someone's spreading rumours about them. But anger can get out of hand - either through becoming too frequent or becoming too intense - and this certainly can be a problem. And with ... (read more)

4. Ways CBT can be used
March 22, 2018

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of counselling that helps clients understand how thoughts and feelings influence behaviour. CBT has helped teens with various issues, including, anger, low opinion of oneself, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem and confidence, and many other problems. For example, a teen who constantly thinks about being made fun of, his weaknesses, his failures and mistakes, his lack of fit in social groups, will very likely avoid social situations (because thoughts affect behaviour). CBT works by helping teens change their thoughts regarding certain events. Th... (read more)

5. How CBT can and will stop negative thoughts
March 22, 2018

Negative thoughts are one of the biggest challenges that people with anxiety often face. It seem an overwhelming task to learn how to to combat them but one of the most effective treatments is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). In this article, I will outline five steps used in CBT to deal with negative thoughts. 1. Negative Automatic Thoughts When you are in (or thinking about) a situation which makes you anxious, you will probably find that negative thoughts creep into your mind about the situation. These are called Negative Automatic Thoughts. These thoughts often escalate and m... (read more)

CBT is in general an effective form of psychological therapy with much to offer people who suffer from CBT anxiety, panic attacks and depression. What is CBT? 7. A breakdown of CBT
March 22, 2018

The drug companies are at it again, they and the medication enthusiasts. As far as they're concerned, all therapy is no more helpful than having a chat to an old friend. Doesn't benefit you one bit, except for the old saw; 'a problem shared is a problem halved.' It can't be denied that there's been a great increase in psychopharmacology over the past ten years and of course the marketing efforts have more than kept pace accordingly. So it's now becoming 'de rigeur' to look upon any form of therapy as costly, ineffective and a waste of time. The result of all this is that patients who form... (read more)

Difficulties with irrational thinking, dysfunctional thoughts and faulty learning are identified and then treated using CBT. Therapy can be conducted with individuals, groups or families and the goals of CBT are to restructure one's thoughts, perceptions and responses which facilitate changes in behaviours. 9. CBT & Anger management
March 22, 2018

CBT is the combination of two psychotherapies, cognitive psychotherapy and the earlier behavioural psychotherapy or behaviourism. Cognitive psychotherapy is especially useful for anger management. Cognitive psychotherapy is the therapy of thoughts... cognitions are just thoughts. The basis of cognitive psychotherapy is that a thought creates an emotion, therefore our emotions are a product of our thoughts. Emotions make behaviours which is why behaviourism combines so well with cognitive psychotherapy. A thought creates an emotion which creates a behaviour or action. This means that ... (read more)

10. CBT - how it can help
March 22, 2018

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - often shortened to CBT, is a directive form of counselling and psychological therapy that focuses on understanding how our thoughts affect our behaviour. It is based on the belief that feelings result from our thoughts and if dysfunctional or negative, result in conditions like anxiety, depression and related self-destructive action behaviour. We all experience times when we are worry about something and go over and over it in our minds. We know how this makes us feel emotionally and in our bodies. The negativity spreads. When these associations are so ... (read more)

11. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy techniques in curing insomnia
March 22, 2018

Recent research shows that one of the most effective cures for insomnia is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or CBT. It was initially pioneered by two leading researchers, Albert Ellis and Aaron beck throughout the late 60's and early 70's as a cure for depression. But further research has shown that the approach can also be highly effective as a treatment for other psychological disorders such as anxiety, stress and insomnia. With nearly 10% of adults experiencing some form of insomnia or sleep deprivation throughout their lives - it is a huge problem which is rarely discussed in public. ... (read more)

12. Core therapies for CBT
January 05, 2018

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (or CBT) is an effective treatment for a wide range of psychological and emotional problems. The underlying theory of CBT is that our emotions are affected by our cognitions - put another way, "We feel what we think". As a Psychiatrist and Therapist in Edinburgh I use CBT techniques extensively in the treatment of common problems such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). CBT views emotional problems as the result of unhealthy and irrational thinking. It employs terms such as Negative Automatic Thoughts and Thinking Errors to descri... (read more)

January 05, 2018

1. Simple measures like practising slow diaphramatic breathing during panic attacks, getting sufficient exercise and giving attention to good nutrition and adequate social contact. Mental (cognitive) rehearsal: (a) Ask the client to divide a desirable response into a number of steps or stages. (b) Have the client imagine actually performing each desirable step leading to the complete satisfactory response. (c) Set a homework assignment of actually experimenting and practicing in "real world" some or all of the steps drawing upon the imaginary practice for confidence. 2. Client's journal: ... 14. The need for good CBT
January 05, 2018

Background: Since the late 60s I've followed a progression of fashionable therapies and studied others back to the turn of the previous Century. I've seen little genuinely new. Mostly just repackaging under new authorship. Long before the term "CBT" became popularised psychologists were making full use of it but they simply talked of an "eclectic cognitive restructuring approach" or "behaviour modification techniques." Then there's the question of the effectiveness of one therapy compared to another. There seems to be no dearth of impressive looking research proving that each therapy is superi... (read more)
