IELTS (The International English Language Testing System) examination can be taken in more than 130 different countries in the world. It is primarily designed to assess primarily the level of students in English language communication for joining for higher education courses held in English at a college or university in countries where English is the primary mode of communication. It is also, nowadays, mandatory in most of those countries for migration or job. |
This test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete and consists of four Sub-tests viz., reading, listening, writing and speaking subtests.
There are two types of IELTS tests - the Academic test and the General Training test. The Academic test may be used to determine a candidate's suitability for study for undergraduate, graduate or at post-graduate level. General Training test is usually for candidates wishing to continue their education at diploma level only. The General Training Module is also needed for migration or employment purposes to countries such as New Zealand, Australia or New Zealand, and for students who prefer to achieve their secondary education in an English-speaking country.
You need to write all your answers on the Answer sheet provided, and you are not allowed to take the question paper from the test center.
You can take the IELTS test through British Council or IDP Australia. Both of them are authorized to conduct the exam and carry the same weightage.
At certain test centers, there is a provision for computer-based test for listening, writing and reading sections. But, most centers conduct only paper-based tests.
There is no pass or fail the IELTS test. The results are presented in the form of bands from 1 to 9, nine being the highest band possible. The college or university where you plan to study will insist you of the required band score for enrollment in the particular course. Also, they may ask you to achieve a minimum score in sub-tests.
You will be getting a score between 0 and 9 for each of the 4 sub-tests. Overall Band Score is calculated as the average score of the 4 Sub-tests. There are no half marks in the writing and speaking subtests. Fractional scores are rounded off. Suppose you scored: 6.5 in the Listening, 5 in the Reading, 7 in the Writing and 6 in the Speaking Sub-test. Then, overall band score will be 6.0 (total score of 24.5 divided by 4, then rounding off).
Usually, you will receive your results within 2-3 weeks after the test.
If you scored less in the test and wanted to re-appear for the test, you must wait a period of a minimum of 3 months. Any number of times you can sit for the test.
