Cooking is something anyone can do. Can you purchase ingredients and read and follow a recipe? Do you own basic cooking equipment? That's all you need for cooking. If you're aiming to improve your culinary skills, read the advice provided below to help you easily create yummy dishes you and your entire family will enjoy.

Always store your spices in a cool and dark place. Their flavor will suffer if they are exposed to heat, humidity, and light. Usually, spices and herbs that are ground will retain their flavor for up to a year. Spices in their whole forms have longer useful lifespans, lasting up to five years. They can remain fresh longer if stored properly.

When preparing stir-fry dishes, slice meat as thinly as possible and on its bias. This can be quite tricky and time-consuming. Use meat that is firm, but unfrozen, and slice the meat across the grain, at 45 degrees.

If you put your meat in the freezer to make it a little hard, it will be easier to cut into thin strips. This tip is particularly handy for Asian dishes. When meat is slightly frozen, it becomes simpler to slice because the fibers won't stretch and tear that easy. A word of caution, allow meat to completely thaw prior to cooking. This will ensure even cooking of your meat.

As you season meat, you should try a cooking a little piece first. You have to use caution when seasoning certain meats, such as meatballs, meatloaf and hamburgers. After you add your seasoning, don't cook the whole thing. Rather, cook a small portion first. After that, you may choose to cook everything or adjust your seasoning accordingly.

When using knives to prepare your food, it is critical that they all have a sharp edge. Dull knives are not only difficult to cut things with, but they are also very dangerous to use. With a dull knife it is easy to slip and cut yourself because it is harder to slice the food, but a knife that is sharp makes much smoother cuts.

Adding cauliflower to your mashed potatoes is a great way to reduce the amount of fat and calories they contain. You should use equal portions of potatoes and cauliflower when making this delicious side. You will not even taste the cauliflower in with the potatoes, because it is so bland. Additionally, cauliflower has the same texture and color as mashed potatoes, so it makes it an easy, healthy addition to your dish.

This type of seasoning is commonly used on other foods besides meat. Sprinkle on popcorn for a tasty movie-night snack, or add a bit to fried rice to spice it up nicely. You'll even surprise yourself with just how delicious your food tastes.

If you want to make chicken stock, you might as well make a lot of it. Plan on preparing a large batch so that the excess can be frozen and used later. Many great recipes including soups, casseroles and stews call for a base of chicken stock. Allow the stock to cool before freezing it in durable, Ziploc bags.

If your recipe calls for a liquid, try using something other than water or milk. This will add a spark to that tired old dish. Substitute plain water with juice, broth, or the water that you cooked your vegetables in. Rather than using milk, think about yogurt, buttermilk or sour cream. You can increase the nutritional and wow factors of any dish, simply by trying different substitutions for liquids that recipes call for.

Many vegetables and herbs emit aromas that remain in the cutting board, regardless of how many times you clean it. Make a mark with permanent ink on the end of the cutting board, so you always know which side to use for the item that you're cutting.

If you plan on using fresh herbs, like parsley or dill in your food, form them into bunches and cut them with scissors. This will prevent them from clumping together and they will be drier than when you chop them.

Cooking can be skill, a hobby, and a profession. With food, the possibilities are limitless.
