76. The Queen's Gambit
December 11, 2020

The name for one of the oldest opening moves in the history of chess. It’s also the name of a novel written by Walter Tevis in 1983. The story is about an orphan named Beth Harmon who becomes a grandmaster level chess player at a very young age. But it also goes into her issues with drug abuse and alcoholism. In October, the TV miniseries was released exclusively on Netflix. Now here’s what’s interesting about the show, besides the fact that it was wildly popular. Over 60 million users have watched the show. The popularity of chess spiked. The online chess site, chess.... (read more)

77. B.S. Bullets
December 09, 2020

One of the things I do to improve my copywriting skills is hand copy ads. You may be wondering, why? Here’s my theory that I believe to be 100% true. Think about this: Have you ever spent so much time around someone that you begin to adopt their own mannerisms? I’m sure I’m not the only one who experienced it. Besides, it’s like how the saying goes, “You are the sum of the five people closest to you.” Sometimes, I’d hand copy entire ads until my hand falls off. Other times I’d focus on a specific component, like bullet points for example. I’d pull up an ... (read more)

78. Using the Secret Behind Propaganda to Boost Your Sales
December 08, 2020

Let’s talk about a completely random topic that came to my mind the other day: Propaganda. Yes, my friend. You’re in for a little history lesson today. Let’s start with, what is propaganda? It’s a type of communication where the goal is to push an agenda and influence an audience’s actions, way of thinking, and attitudes. We’ve seen many forms of propaganda happen throughout our world’s history. Here are some of the most notable ones: Rosie the Riveter, the iconic woman in blue and red headband flexing her bicep. The purpose of this campaign was to recruit wo... (read more)

79. How to Sell Your Product or Service Without Making Your Readers Feel Like They're Being Sold To
December 07, 2020

I used to be subscribed to the Morning Brew newsletter. If you’re not familiar with them, they send daily emails where they provide you the latest news in a very entertaining way. Their headlines are straightforward (And sometimes clever). And they give the main gist of the news in just a few sentences, one paragraph at max. What’s even more impressive is how well they create their sponsored ads to get you to read them. They keep the formatting of the ads consistent with the rest of their newsletter. As for the text, the writing style and tone is also consistent. ... (read more)

80. My Personal Take on the Beauty Standard
November 27, 2020

I feel bad for the social media addicts who compare themselves to the people they see online. All the glamorous things they see online are not what they seem. They see someone who looks nice and thin? It’s all in the angles, or photoshop, or filters. Or they see celebrities who are on a whole different level of beautiful? You can thank plastic surgery for that. Of course, this isn’t true for all celebrities. But most of the ones we see online or in the media have gone through some degree of artificial change. No judgment from me, they can do whatever they want to their... (read more)

81. Do You Know What Grinds My Gears?
November 26, 2020

I’ll be blunt here. I don’t like how people seem to skip Thanksgiving and go straight to celebrating Christmas. As soon as November comes, stores start bringing out their Christmas merchandise, and people start putting up their lights and trees. Even worse, They don’t take down their decorations until way past Christmas. The longest record goes to one of my former neighbors, who didn’t take down their lights until July. Now I understand from a business standpoint that Christmas is a heavily commercialized holiday, and they want to take full advantage of it. But Th... (read more)

82. This Man Teaches You How to Pickpocket
November 25, 2020

I once watched a TED Talk by Apollo Robbins, who describes himself as… “The World’s Leading Expert on Pickpockets.” Funnily enough, his appearance reminds me a lot of Seth MacFarlane. But that’s besides the point. In the video, he talked about how he can pickpocket somebody’s watch, wallet, or phone by manipulating their attention. He even demonstrated this by picking a victi- I mean, volunteer from the audience. At first, it seemed like he was performing an illusion with a poker chip. But while all that’s happening, he pickpocketed the volunteer’s watch, cas... (read more)

83. Want to Watch Paint Dry in Real Time?
November 24, 2020

It’s amazing what you can find on the Internet these days. They’re either extremely impressive or extremely ridiculous. There’s just no in-between. For examples, One of my favorite things to watch are videos where people make art in the most creative ways. Those videos are always impressive. On the other hand, one of the more ridiculous videos I came across is a 10 hour video of watching paint dry. And it wasn’t like it wasn’t a popular video. It had close to one million views. Did people watch it all the way through? Well, that I highly doubt. But ... (read more)

84. Subtle Jokes Hidden Throughout Spongebob and Other Childhood Shows and Movies
November 23, 2020

Once in a while, I like to write about Spongebob. In case you haven’t noticed yet or if you’re my articles for the first time, I love Spongebob. It’s one of my favorite childhood shows. And this is going to be another one of these articles. One of my favorite episodes of all-time from that show is where Spongebob gets his hands on Mermaidman’s belt, similar to Batman’s utility belt. One of the things that the belt can do is shrink things, and people too. Spongebob shrinks his neighbor Squidward, but doesn’t know how to unshrink him. So he goes to his “wise” friend, Pat... 85. Why TV Show - Conflict = Bad
November 14, 2020

A month or two ago, I was introduced to a Japanese animated show. Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto The show focuses on a high school student named Sakamoto, and he has a reputation for being the most popular student. He makes all his fangirls faint and all the guys envy him. And everything he does looks cool. Not to mention, he’s abnormally perfect. If someone tries to prank him, he’s always somehow four steps ahead and comes out the victor. If someone tries to hurt him, it’s the attacker that ends up being humiliated. The point is, as you watch more episodes of th... (read more)

86. How to Speed Up Your Email Writing Process
November 13, 2020

Yesterday, I had the great pleasure to be featured on someone’s podcast show. If you want to listen to it, you’re going to have to wait. We did the recording yesterday, and it’ll take another 30 to 40 days for the host’s team to edit and publish the episode. But that doesn’t mean I can’t share with you right now what I talked about on the podcast. So the question I was asked was (If my memory serves me correctly), “What are some tips you can give to make people’s email writing process easier?” Here’s how I broke my response down. Before I start writing my email, I... (read more)

87. Why I Added Drawing Back to My Short List of Hobbies
November 12, 2020

In addition to music production, I also got back into art, specifically sketching. I remember I used to do it quite often several years ago. Back when I worked in Burger King, I would spend my break sitting with one of my co-worker’s boyfriend and drawing with him. Fun times. Then I stopped when I left the place and became busy with college work and internships. Then on the week of Halloween, I was on a call with a friend and she suggested that we should try replicating one of the drawings done by one of our mutual friends, who’s a talented artist. And so we did t... (read more)

88. Advice You Should Take From a Woman Who Lives As If It's the 1950s
November 11, 2020

There was an interesting video I found a few months back called, “This woman lives every day like it’s 1958.” And the title wasn’t lying. A young lady who goes by the name of Laci Fay is who I want to talk about with you today. The car she drives with her husband. Everything in her wardrobe, from the hats to the dresses, shoes, and accessories. Even her house looks like it time traveled from the 1950s. And to enhance her 1958 lifestyle, she regularly goes to the Bulloch Drug Pharmacy. Yes, it’s a pharmacy but it also has a section where you can order soft dri... (read more)

89. Why I Won't Fall For the Seduction of AI Copywriting Technology
November 10, 2020

I once had a conversation with a fellow marketing person through a Lunchclub meeting. I enjoyed talking to him. We got along very well. At one point during our conversation, he mentioned something about using AI to do the email copywriting work for us. My first reaction was, “Interesting. Can you point me to the website?” Not that I had an interest in using it for my own copywriting stuff, but I was curious to see how the technology works. So I went to the website after the call and it wasn’t what I expected. The service doesn’t exactly write emails for you, ... (read more)

90. Who Would Win In a Fight, Email or Social Media?
November 06, 2020

A while back, I came across, yet again, another online discussion about the great debate between email marketing and social media marketing. Since I’m seeing this time and time again, I might as well discuss this with you. I actually spoke a little bit about this in an interview I did with a friend about three months ago. It depends on how you set up your business. I know some people who run their businesses with zero social media presence. They rely purely on referrals, which is perfectly fine. I know others who run their businesses purely on social media, like certai... (read more)

91. Horror
November 05, 2020

I remember there was a day where someone showed me an 1-bit pixel art game called… World of Horror It takes place in a small town in Japan, Shiokawa, where you come across many unusual events and horrific characters. Like events where people fall into comas out of nowhere. Or a monster, heavily inspired by the urban legend, Bloody Mary, that’s been on a rampage killing innocent high school students. Or all of a sudden, you find out there are holes appearing on your character’s body for unknown reasons. And the text you read in the game doesn’t make the game any le... (read more)

92. The Psychological Traps of Supermarkets
November 04, 2020

I watched a video and read a few articles about supermarkets, and what they do to get us customers to spend as much money as possible when we visit. Everything you see in a supermarket, and how it’s laid out, is all planned. The scary part is, you don’t even know that they’re controlling you with their psychological puppet strings as soon as you walk through the doors. Even if you do know their tricks, it’s hard to escape from them. If you don’t, let me give you a quick lesson. Keep in mind that their goal is to keep you in the store for as long as possible. The longer you’re in... (read more)

93. Why People in Politics Should Never Attempt Copywriting
November 03, 2020

There’s no better day to talk about this than today, Election Day. I’m sitting inside, and just waiting for the potential chaos to unfold across the country. While that’s happening, I watched a video a friend of mine sent me talking about how to have a conversation. Sounds so simple and silly, but it’s amazing how many people don’t know how to do it. Take people in politics, for example. The video I watched described a typical political conversation very accurately. It’s almost always going to end up in two people talking at each other and refusing to listen. They... (read more)

94. Why the Avengers Theme Song is Stuck In My Head
October 27, 2020

A friend once asked me, “What’s your favorite song as of right now?” My answer was, “I don’t have a favorite song. But there is a song that’s stuck in my head right now, and that’s Marvel’s Avengers theme song.” She laughed at me because she thought I was joking. But I was 100% serious, and I gave that answer for two reasons: 1. I’m currently learning how to play that song on the piano. 2. I have a newfound appreciation for orchestra music. Yes, I have indeed. Never have I ever thought I’d develop an interest in this. So I’ve been constantly listeni... (read more)

95. Why I Don't Pay Attention to Reviews Anymore
October 23, 2020

I don’t know about you, but I’ve gotten to a point in my life where I don't trust reviews anymore. Whether I go to buy products, eat at restaurants, or see movies, I don’t read a single review beforehand. When I read the one star product reviews on Amazon, most, if not all them have nothing to do with reviewing the product itself. They either talk about something extremely minor or something else that was clearly their own fault. Restaurant reviews? There are going to be people who complain about bad food or terrible service, but it doesn’t even apply to me most of the time. Bec... (read more)

96. Why Reading Many Copywriting Books Is a Waste of Money
October 22, 2020

People tell us that reading is good, and it’s true. It’s one of the best ways to learn new things. When it comes to learning copywriting, there are so many books out there that can help you improve. But is it good to read multiple books on copywriting? Is there such a thing as reading too many? We all see those posts on social media and motivational speeches on YouTube telling us we should spend our time learning new skills and doing other productive things like reading books instead of doing supposedly unproductive things like watching TV or playing video games. Let me answer t... (read more)

97. Snapple Cap Fact #454
October 21, 2020

Here’s an interesting thing I learned today that I thought you’d love to know, but will be of little added value to your everyday life. Armadillo shells are bulletproof. How do we know? It’s all thanks to a good fellow in Texas who accidentally took one for the team. He found an armadillo in his backyard at three in the morning. He tried to shoot the animal with his revolver, but one of the bullets ricocheted off the shell and went through his jaw. It’s unfortunate that this happened to him and I hope the man recovered with no problems. But I got to thank him for makin... (read more)

98. Giving a Friend My Non-expert Branding Advice
October 20, 2020

Here’s a story that happened a while back. I was on a call with some friends. One of them shared a business idea with the group and wanted our feedback He wanted to create his own clothing line. It was an idea he was developed while he was stuck inside during the lockdown. While he was talking about it, he shared some notes with us too. I read it over and immediately knew what was missing. Here’s what I said to him, obviously not in the exact words, but the main idea still remains. ————— So you have all the physical features figured out, which is good. But if... (read more)

99. What a Wild Weekend Work-cation
October 19, 2020

If you don’t know this about me yet, music production is a hobby I’ve been into for quite a while now. A little over 10 months now, to be exact. But I have to admit, for two-thirds of those ten months, I didn’t take it as seriously as I should’ve. I’d work on the craft for one day, then leave it on the back shelf for a few weeks. That was the worst case scenario, and yes, it was terribly inconsistent. But recently, my brain made a switch, and I made a goal to create something everyday, even if it was incomplete. And when I say create something, I mean literally an... (read more)

100. True Perfection is Authenticity
October 16, 2020

Some of my younger friends are at the point in their lives where they’re starting to focus on finding jobs. Out of all the stages of the job searching process, the interview is the most stressful part to most of them. And I can understand why. The pressure of talking to the very person who has the power to hire or reject you. The pressure of wanting to answer the interview questions perfectly. It can be a bit nerve-wracking. So whenever they come to talk to me about it, I always tell them the same thing. “It’s no more than just a conversation between two peop... (read more)
