By Udita Chaturvedi With over three decades of practice, interior and furniture designer Lalit Hira has exploited his creative skills in accomplishing challenging and meaningful designs around the world. With formal education in interior designing from England, he established Project Designers — an interior design consultancy firm — in 1984 and launched Lalit Hira Designs, a furniture design label, about two decades later. A creative innovator, Lalit Hira has modelled corporate, residential, and commercial premises. Each of his designs reflects highly on the interplay of thought and skill, so much so, that his work could fit in everyone's home or office. At LDF 2013, as part of the contingent of designers and artists under the India Pavilion at Designerblock, Lalit Hira showcases his design genius with two products – a folding chair and a footstool. The folding chair, christened ‘Tac’, is a lightweight, easy-to-use and space saving design that appeals to the eye and is classic yet contemporary; designed to blend into any ambiance. A highlight of the chair is that it can stand upright without support when folded, unlike most folding chairs that require a surface to lean against. Lalit has won numerous accolades and nominations, globally, for his innovative designs. In the last five years he has created, prototyped, registered and owns six furniture designs, and has two patents pending. Characterized by their distinctiveness, aesthetic, multi-functionality and ease on the pocket — his furniture holds the uniqueness of a designer-label, while it fits comfortably into the mass-market. Named after a popular north Indian street-snack, the footstool ‘Puchka’ is constructed with simple joinery details that completely eliminate the use of any hardware. The footstool is a concept that extends the use of the raw material in a flexi-flat pack version and its form challenges the basic constraint of the formation of soft surfaces. Besides being an expert at space planning and furniture designing, he is also a maven at preparing lighting layouts, landscape layouts and beautification of building facades. to view images click on www.indiaartndesign.com
