1. Importance of handwashing during Corona Pandemic
October 16, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic provides the major reminder that handwashing with soap and water is one of the simplest, most effective ways to stop the grow of germs and stay healthy. Handwashing with soap and water can prevent 1 in 3 people from getting unhealthy with diarrhoea and 1 in 5 people from getting a respiratory illness. That is why handwashing is so important, especially at lead times such as after using the bathroom, when preparing food, before eating, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. "Hand Hygiene for All" is the theme of this year's Global Handwashing Day, fo... (read more)

2. Call for decency and cooperation
October 04, 2020

I am a concerned patriot of the United States of America, and I beseech those who love our country to consider. Take heed. I've thought much about the time when we could disagree with one another, but that didn't mean that we should banish those who disagree with us from this country or even the planet. Disagreement provided us with the opportunity to grow as individuals and as a country. Disagreeing helps us see things we hadn't considered. When we approach issues with respect for others and concern for the health and safety of all people not just for ourselves, and with common decency we are... (read more)

3. Demanding Justice but Showing No Mercy - The Obvious Hypocrisy of the Protests
September 01, 2020

Without resorting to entire theological treatise to explain it, and it being most likely that a secular mind would hardly care, much less understand it, one single Bible verse will do fine. “He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (Mic 6:8) The equation is blindingly obvious. The cops need to do justly when dealing with our black citizens. We see that in some cases they are not. For the black community the call is to be merciful. We see that black on black crime and aborti... (read more)

4. YEEOUCH!!!
August 31, 2020

A day last week, I played tennis in the morning, hustled home, cleaned up, and joined a four-way ZOOM teleconference call for an hour and a half. About 30 minutes of the call was actually value-added; the remaining time dedicated to trouble-shooting technical issues on one end of the telecon or off-the-subject rabbit trails. Maddening. I can report that a week later, we are no closer to our goal; have accomplished nothing positive; maybe took a step back. It was basically another exercise in listening to ourselves talk. We’ve been participating in this futility for years. It’s like we’re... (read more)

5. NJ Medical Marijuana Got Cheaper in 2020 July
July 15, 2020

New Jersey sales tax on medical marijuana was cut to four percent on July 1, down from six percent. This represents the first stage in a three-year plan designed to phase out state taxes on purchases of medicinal cannabis. Fast forward to July 1, 2021 and you may see that the state sales tax will undoubtedly be cut a lot more — to two percent. Then, in 2022, it will be completely gone. Don’t assume that this means marijuana that is medical be totally tax-free, though. Each community is permitted to impose a two percent “transfer tax” on purchases; that said, no municipality has instituted... (read more)

6. AN AVIATOR'S FINAL FLIGHT
July 13, 2020

I’ve got to tell you, folks, I’m becoming depressed and weary from writing these kinds of articles, but at my age I don’t see the trend abating. Initially, it was my first college friend and fraternity brother, Mike Glossinger, then a lifelong friend from primary school, Larry Livingston. There are others I have not written about, so permit me a bit of venting about the unavoidable biological reality that claims us all: DAMN! DAMN! DAMN! With that in mind— July 8, 2020 was the last day for Dennis James Hull. I would say he boarded the mystery train, but in Dennis’s case he took ... (read more)

11. Covid-19, Crisis or a Crossroads - When Defiance Becomes a Delusion
May 08, 2020

Like blind men stumbling around in the dark, daily we hear more about the great efforts to beat back the Covid-19 pandemic. While President Trump sends a hospital ship to New York and the Javits Center field hospital opens up for treating patients – endlessly vociferous Gov. Cuomo, keeps sending people to nursing homes - to die. State governors are violating every part of the constitution they can think of and are feeling the backlash and the wrath of the people in some states. April 30, 2020

COVID-19, certainly not to be taken lightly, has interrupted life as we know it including the international economy and other things interesting like visiting relatives, eating out, and other forms of socializing. Typical of people in crisis we’ve developed a herd mentality. The media and politicians, who as long as I can remember, have had 20-percent integrity, believability and credibility ratings exaggerate and spread panic; and suddenly we believe everything they bloviate. Go figure. To be more precise, the scribes insist on being called journalists, which they are NOT—in any sense of... (read more)

Or it could be that we simply can’t pin down the reason our finances don’t quite add up. This is because money management is... well, it’s tricky. 17. REVERIE
April 17, 2020

MEMORIES POP-UP at random times during a lifetime, sometimes triggered by music, return to a familiar place, a sudden thought about a particular person, an old photograph; it could be any of a number of things. Today, a song on the radio took me back to a long ago event. It was one of those pleasant recollections that had me reminiscing for a while; the kind that prompts one to wonder aloud, “Where did the time go?” That got me off on a sidetrack of wondering about what my final memory will be—you know, just before the lights go out, the music fades, and all goes silent behind my eyes. F... (read more)

Cybersecurity & Covid-19: Vulnerability and What to Do About It Steve Burgess, 2020 As if we didn’t have enough to worry about. With so many of us working from home (close to 90% of American corporations are encouraging or requiring employees to do so) and having little time to set up corporate cybersecurity barriers, employees and their companies may be more vulnerable than ever. 21. A TIME TO LIVE
March 21, 2020

A TIME TO LIVE, AND A TIME TO DIE are two appointments all living things must keep; and is the thesis for a poem by Audrey Heller. Further, she charged us not to let precious time go by. I consider this very good advice, which I’ve attempted to follow during my allotted time. I say, burn a candle at both ends (and maybe in the middle) rather than throw it in a closet to waste away. The “living” part is (by far) my favorite, mainly because the other is a mystery. Hospice workers report that as individuals near death, they’re not afraid and even see family members waiting on the other side ... (read more)

22. Coronavirus, the Economy and the Great Eschaton - Fair Warning
March 14, 2020

Coronavirus, the Economy and the Great Eschaton – Fair Warning Some doomsdayers are well onboard with dire and severe warnings about the emergence of the coronavirus outbreak. Some, like CNN are already calling it a “pandemic.” But level heads, both in and out of prophetic warnings, are more cautious and see it as a foretoken or even a formula for worldwide problems, yet to come. Speculations abound. Some say Covid-19 is a bioweapon, yet others think it came from outer space, like astrobiologist Chandra Wickramasinghe of the Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology. Where does it... (read more)

23. ROLLER DERBY, POLITICS, and the NBA
March 02, 2020

This essay is about quality, or rather about the disintegration of quality in certain aspects of my life, much of it occurring since the end of the 1980s. I admit “quality” is in the perception of the beholder; that is, it varies from person to person. However, no matter how you cut it, QUALITY has two aspects. The first aspect is CONFORMANCE TO REQUIREMENTS; that is, whatever the product or service is; it must conform to whatever standards one requires as an individual or customer. To fall short of one’s expectations is to NOT have “quality”. The second aspect is DESIGN FEATURES. These ... (read more)

24. METAMORPHOSIS: Transformation of an Opinionated Man
January 10, 2020

AS GREGOR SAMSA AWOKE from unsettling dreams one morning, he found himself transformed into a monstrous vermin. --Franz Kafka, The Metamorphosis Ever know anyone who has experienced a life-altering metamorphosis? Come to think of it, that’s probably a rhetorical question. Chances are we all have. The experience may not have been as extraordinary as that described by Franz Kafka, but to me, my particular creeping transformation is just as unwelcome as turning into Kafka’s giant bug.
