2. Cat-and-Mouse Game Played in Zimbabwe's Election Cyberwar
July 26, 2013

HARARE, ZIMBABWE — Zimbabwe's government has blocked mass SMS text-message bursts ahead of next week's election, hobbling a powerful source of non-official information in the tightly controlled southern African state, activists and a phone company source said on Friday. With the clock ticking down to the July 31 poll in which President Robert Mugabe is looking to add to his 33 years in power, web portal Kubatana.net said it had noticed this week that its mass text messages were mysteriously getting lost. Its provider, Econet Wireless, Zimbabwe's largest mobile phone firm w... (read more)

3. Stuxnet: An Effective Cyberwar Weapon
June 28, 2013

In 2010, Iran reported that as many as 1,000 of its centrifuges at the Natanz nuclear facility, used for enriching weapons-grade uranium, were destroyed by a computer virus. The virus allegedly wrecked the electric motors by accelerating them to damaging speeds and setting back the Iranian nuclear program for at least two years. Iran blamed the U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies for the attack.According to the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, the weapon used for the attack was probably a virus called Stuxnet. But unlike other computer viruses, Stuxne... (read more)

June 07, 2013

The Guardian newspaper reported Friday that U.S. President Barack Obama has ordered various government agencies to prepare for offensive cyberwarfare operations, including drawing up a list of potential overseas targets for U.S. cyber-attacks. It is the third secret U.S. security document to be published by The Guardian in 48 hours. The leak comes at an extremely sensitive time, as Obama prepares to confront his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at a summit in California later Friday over alleged Chinese cyberattacks on western targets. The Guardian newspaper reported Thursday that the N... (read more)

6. The US and al-Qaeda are Engaged in Cyber War
May 30, 2012

In a rare glimpse into cyber warfare tactics, a top U.S. official has acknowledged that the U.S. government hacked into websites run by al-Qaida's affiliate in Yemen, changing advertisements that boasted about killing Americans into advertisements that underscored the deaths of Muslim civilians in al-Qaida terror attacks. Now this is the part that they admit. I liken it to the iceberg and the Titanic. The thing that did all of the damage was the part that was submerged out of sight. When the crew saw the sliver that was above the water it was too late to do anything about it. By this I me... (read more)

7. What's in a (Cyber) Name?
October 27, 2011

What's in a (Cyber) Name? by Steve Burgess, 2011 As the United States (and the world) prepare for the possibility of Cyber War, it seems that there’s little agreement on what the term means. Merriam-Webster defines it as “of, relating to, or involving computers or computer networks (as the Internet). Yet we have a government Cyber Command and reports are full of military metaphors. Plug the term into the DOD’s public website, and you get 1270 articles. One such article, "Defending a New Domain: the Pentagon's Cyber Security," had 77 references and included the following: cyberwarfare, c... (read more)

8. Cyber War: Here Now or Hype?
October 25, 2011

Cyber War: Here Now or Hype? by Steve Burgess, 2001 By some accounts, cyberwar is already occurring. There have been weekly reports of US systems being hacked from Chinese cyber addresses.  Chinese hacking supposedly ranges from U.S. government systems to Google mail to the very computer on which you read this article. The StuxNet worm invaded and disabled physical systems of Iran’s nuclear power program for a while. It is widely believed to be the collaborative work between the governments of United States and Israel. There have even been viruses inside the USAF drone command. ... (read more)
