What is snowball sampling? In research, the sampling technique is very significant part of the research process. In research, snowball sampling is where participants in a research recruit other participants for test. One role of this sampling technique is when the real participants are hard to find. Snowball is used as a term to connote a ball which when it is rolled, will gather snow along the way and becomes large and large. Snowball sampling is a method of sampling which does not use probability. The researchers will use their own judgment to get the participants. There are two steps involved in snowball sampling which include: i. Identify potential participants who will take part in the research. In this case, only one or two participants will be found in the study. ii. Request the participants to recruit other people who can be potential participants in the research. They should be made aware that they do not have given other names. The two steps above are repeated until the sample size that is required has been achieved. The ethical requirement in this aspect is that the participants are not obligated to recruit other participants. They have an option to either recruit other participants or take part on their own. They should be requested to let others join in the research team. When individuals are named, normally called cold-calling, there is no particular procedure that is followed. Cold-calling is normally reserved for snowball sampling because there is no chance of encountering embarrassment or ethical dilemmas. Why snowball sampling is used Some people may not want to be found out. If the research is about an aspect that is not acceptable in the society, the then the participants will not want to come out publicly. Participants may want to recruit other potential participants so that they know others who have the same characteristics. It is advisable to understand the various sampling techniques
