The flick is directed by duo Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer and stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbentl, Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw in lead roles. Unfortunately the film seems too long and unbearable. The story could have been narrated in 6 miniseries or a full blown television series. Though there are emotional and touchy moments but it feels too much is going on at the same time which is difficult to digest. The execution is awful. The biggest flaw is that each actor is used for so many roles. On the whole, flick is not wow but average watch. It can be summarized as a meal with hoch poch of ingredients, a bit messy served all at a time. If we talk about the story, six tales are blended. In 19th century, Jim Sturgess is mysteriously treated by a doctor and becomes friendly with an escaped slave. In 1931, a young musician aspires to become a renowned composer. In 1975, a journalist investigates a nuclear power company. In present day, a publisher helps gangsters to release from bars by taking shelter in a resort from where he is unable to check out. In near future, a clone waitress realizes that she has a greater fortunate destiny. In the far future, a tribesman comes across a technologically advanced woman. The director could not execute his idea of blending six stories well. If the six worlds would have been laid down separately, the film could do better. In an attempt to cover all together, the film lacks rhythm and synchronization. Coming to the cast, Tom Hanks steals the show. He has put his best foot forward in each of his roles. Halle Berry is the second one to uplift the flick. Though his Korean make up irritate the audience but he justifies all his roles and excels in acting department. Both the actors have portrayed their versatility well. Cloud Atlas excels in one department. It has something to offer everyone- I mean whether you like comedy, romance, drama or action. But still, there would be mix reviews after the watch. First impression will be appealing for some and disappointing for others. It stands somewhere between glorious and ridiculous. It may not be a masterpiece but it’s surely not an ordinary attempt by the two directors. They have tried hard to explore their best.
