That ‘high-rises provide vantage points, otherwise unthinkable of’ is beyond debate and when such a point provides an unobstructed view as well, it’s definitely a bonanza. It is this distinct advantage that Aedas, the architects of Mongkok Residence, Hong Kong plan to serve to its residents through this towering landmark. Located in a place that once held the Guinness record for being the most densely populated district on earth and having a density of 1,30,000 people per sq.km currently, the project is replete with challenges. That it’s planned on a plot of just 614 sq m is proof enough of the extent of urbanization. It was a contemporary interpretation of traditional architecture that led to the development of the most salient feature of the design, viz. its zig-zag facade. It is reminiscent of the ‘illegal’ iron balconies that the cityscape played host to, during the early post-war period. Sensing that such elements were resultant of man’s inherent urge to ‘unobstructedly’ draw into his senses, the world around him, the Project Design Director Cary Lau’s team made ‘legal provisions’ for their inclusion in the design, by creating irregular protrusions for each apartment. This is in consonance with the design philosophy of Aedas that great designs are delivered by a deep understanding of the social and cultural preferences of the communities they’re being designed for. ‘Green Wall’ and ‘Vegetated Roof’ confer upon the design, eco-sensibility, by reducing ‘Heat Island Effect’. They also serve to enhance the aesthetic value of the structure. While insulated glazing units reduce heat gain, the use of low-emitting materials ensures better air quality indoors. The design has rightfully received accolades for the concept it has embodied. It’s a winner of LEAF Awards 2014 under ‘Best Future Building of the Year’ category and has been highly commended in WAF 2014, Cityscape Awards 2014, MIPIM and many more.
