8 Pool Rules to Keep Your Family Safe

You are ecstatic about your Fort Worth custom pools. It was the perfect addition to your yard. Now, you and your family have a place to gather and play together during the hot summer months. While there is nothing better than a dip in the cool water, it’s important for your pool to be safe and fun. Before the summer season starts, sit down and establish some safety rules for you and your family.

1. Never let children swim alone. Even the best of swimmers can have accidents.  As a rule of thumb, if your kids are outside swimming, you need to be out there, too. Be alert and attentive while watching them. It’s also a great idea to keep a phone nearby in case you need to call for help.
2. Teach your kids to swim. One of the best ways to keep your kids safe around water is to teach them to swim. If you or your spouse doesn’t know how to swim, make sure that each of you learns as well. Even children as young as 1 can be taught how to float or swim in emergency situations. By ensuring that everyone in your family is comfortable and confident around water, you will rest easier when everyone is in the pool.
3. Practice basic life saving techniques. While accidents aren’t common, they do happen. It’s best to be prepared for when they do. Get certified to perform CPR on adults and on children. Then, brush up on those skills regularly. Then, teach your children as well. If an emergency ever occurs, your family will be well equipped to handle it. You could end up saving a life.
4. Keep your pool and spa behind a fence. Install a fence that is at least 4-feet tall around the perimeter of your water feature. Then, make sure that the gate is self-latching. This will prevent small children from sneaking into the pool area unaccompanied.
5. Invest in a safety cover for your pool. While a cover is a great idea to keep debris and leaves out of your pool during the off season, it’s also an important safety feature. It can prevent young kids from falling in the pool and being seriously injured. Once you have installed a cover, be sure to inspect it regularly to ensure that it is in working order.
6. Consider installing an alarm. If you want to be extra vigilant about safety, installing pool and gate alarms are a great idea. The gate alarm will notify you each time the gate is accessed. Then, the pool alarm can send off an alert each time a wave is made on the surface of your pool. That way if a child falls in, you’ll know.
7. Don’t run around the pool. Whether you are swimming or not, running around the pool can be dangerous. First, it could cause a small child to fall in the pool. However, for those who are already swimming, the surface of the pool deck can be slippery. If this happens, someone could fall and get seriously hurt.
8. Share your rules with friends and family. Sitting down with your family and establishing rules and safety protocol is the best way to ensure that people have fun and stay safe while in the water. However, it’s equally as important to share those rules with neighbors and friends. If you have a pool, chances are you will have plenty of people over for parties and swim dates. Make sure that everyone is aware of safety rules while in the water.
