101. Hate How You Sound on a Recording?
November 25, 2014
Does this sound familiar? You hear a recording of your voice and you cringe? Perhaps you are embarrassed. Well, you are not alone. Most people do not recognize what they hear on the recording because it does not sound like the voice they hear in their head. Unfortunately, the voice on the recording equipment is exactly how you sound to everyone else. Fortunately, you have a better voice in side of you. It is deeper in pitch and more mature in quality. Not old-sounding – not young-sounding – ageless. It is neither too soft in volume nor too loud. And, once you discover it a... (read more)

102. Financial Freedom for Professional Women - Changing Your Negative Beliefs about Money
November 10, 2014
Have you ever stopped to really think about what your beliefs are around money? Did you know that many of our money beliefs were shaped during our childhood? Some of those beliefs were planted unintentionally by our parents or other influential people in our lives. Others rise out of our own personal experiences, especially past negative experiences. For some it can be a fear of writing checks because in the past they have bounced so many. For others, it can be a fear of success. Some beliefs serve us well and are helpful, while others hold us back. Negative money beliefs limit us a... (read more)

103. Speaking with Color - Not Too Much Or Too Little
November 10, 2014
Color refers to those various effects in speech which give life to your delivery. Another way to describe color is the emotion and the animation heard in your voice and seen in your body language and facial expression when talking.
The interesting thing about color is that you don’t want too much or too little. Similar to the fairy tale, Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, you want the right amount of color when you speak to keep your audience’s attention on your words.
If you are overly expressive, you will sound like you are acting or talking to children. One of my clients was a former... (read more)

104. Why Speaking Louder Is Not the Answer If You Are Soft-Spoken
November 04, 2014
One of the most fascinating things I find on television or in the movies is that everyone’s speech is clear and understandable. Whether the actors are playing hoodlums or heroes, whether the characters are from Harlem or Park Avenue, they all speak distinctly. This particular characteristic is a prerequisite for actors whether they are on stage or in front of the camera. Good diction is not just something for those in Hollywood however. Success in your business life depends in part on being understood when you speak. If your diction is not understood the 1st time you say something, ... (read more)

106. Just How Good Is Your Diction?
October 27, 2014
Voice Training website. ">While it is true that most people do not like to hear themselves on recording equipment because they do not like or recognize the sound of their speaking voice, there is another group of people who are also surprised by their lack of clear diction. And it does not just happen to those in which English is not their first language. It happens to those in which English is their native tongue. Being able to speak the language of the country in which you are living is very important. Being understood when you speak the language of the country in which you are ... (read more)

107. The Blessings of Nervousness on the Podium, the Playing Field or the Stage
September 30, 2014
Whether you are a musician or a quarterback, an actor or a public speaker, nervousness is indeed something you should embrace and not something you should try to eliminate. Seasoned professionals in their field – be it athletes, musicians, actors, clergy, or public speakers – all experience nervousness in some fashion. It is one of the reasons they are professionals: they are able to harness that nervous energy and put it to good use.
The difficulty for some who are addressing an audience, for example, is that their nervousness is in control which places them in the freeze or flight mo... (read more)

108. A Voice Without Expression Is Like a Garden Without Color
September 17, 2014
For 5 months of the year, my garden is brown, lifeless, and dull. Were it to remain colorless through the rest of the year, I would have no passion or interest in gardening.
That which makes the voice interesting to listen to – by means of your vocal variety, facial expression, and body language – is known as color. It is what all listeners want to see and hear. If those we watched on TV and in the movies had no expression, Hollywood would not exist.
We expect color in our homes, in our clothing, in our offices, in our cars and even in our iPhones; yet, there are those who speak w... (read more)

109. Public Speaking: Is there One Correct Speed for Everyone?
September 09, 2014
Absolutely not. Some people talk a bit slower; others a bit faster. However, there is a general rate of speed which everyone should fall within. This rate of speed lies somewhere between 140 and 180 words per minute.
Whether you are on the podium or just in conversation, your listeners will have difficulty keeping up with you if you speak too quickly. On the other hand, a speed which is too slow will either put your audience to sleep or move them in the direction of their iPhones.
To test your rate of speech, read the following paragraphs out loud with a timer. Set it for 1 minu... (read more)

112. Which Words Best Describe Your Speaking Voice?
August 26, 2014
When you hear your voice on a recording, what first comes to mind? Would you say that your voice is wimpy, weak or too soft? Perhaps it is throaty, raspy or hoarse. Do you find it higher in pitch than you thought? Maybe you sound too young. You may find it breathy or whispery or the exact opposite – strident and shrill. Does it sound nasal and whiny like that of Fran Drescher? Perhaps it is reedy, heavy, dull or loud.

114. How Voice Training Improves Your Diction
August 19, 2014
When I first started my voice business, my husband remarked that he did not understand what my clients were saying in their ‘before’ recording. He was, however, able to understand everyone in their ‘after’ clips. Why were my clients speaking more clearly in their ‘after’ recording? While I will certainly help someone with his/or her enunciation if there is an obvious problem, accent reduction is not my specialty.
As a voice coach, I teach others how to improve the sound of the speaking voice by using their chest cavity as their primary sounding board. Most likely you are not aware ... (read more)

115. What Is Your Reaction When You Hear Yourself on a Recording?
August 19, 2014
One of the most interesting comments I have heard from my clients was a man who said that he really loved the sound of his voice but he didn’t like how he sounded on recording equipment. What this man did not understand was that the way he hears himself in his head is not his true sound. And it is definitely not how everyone else hears him.
Most people do not like their voice on recording equipment for two reasons: 1. they don’t recognize what they hear; and, 2. the pitch of their voice sounds higher on the recording equipment than how they ‘think’ they sound; If you have ever ... (read more)

116. What Does Your Voice Say About You?
August 08, 2014
Your visual image makes a statement; your verbal image makes a statement. But what about your vocal image? Have you ever considered what the sound of your speaking voice says about you? When we hear a rich, resonant, deep voice, like that of Catherine Zeta Jones or James Earl Jones, we are captivated. Would you describe your voice as captivating?
Most people never consider that 37% of the image they project is the sound of their speaking voice. By the way, I’m talking about the one you hear on your answering machine – not the one you hear in your head.

Ever since Garcinia Cambogia and Raspberry Ketones appeared on the Dr. Oz Show, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about their role in the HCG diet, more specifically HCG 2.0. 118. Does Your Voice Complete Your Professional Image Or Detract From It?
July 29, 2014
As a people, we are concerned about the image we project. Certainly in business we want to project a professional image. Does your speaking voice complete that image or does it detract? By the way, I’m not talking about the voice you hear in your head. I’m referring to the sound you hear on your voicemail – the sound by which everyone else recognizes you.
If you are soft-spoken, for example, the image you are projecting is one of insecurity or weakness or diffidence. By learning to increase your volume to a normal level of sound, that image – which may have been 'screaming' lack of c... (read more)

119. What Is Residual (or Passive) Income?
July 26, 2014
Residual income is when you continue to get paid after the work is done. Residual income comes from building an asset that continues to pay you after the work has been done. This includes royalties from books, movies, or songs and also income that comes from real estate or business investments where you don’t actually have to be present to earn it. A book, movie or song is an asset to the people earning royalties from it. 120. When the Caller Asks to Speak to Your Mother
July 14, 2014
I hear it time and time again. Women emailing me or phoning to ask me what they can do about their childlike voice, wondering if it is possible to change that sound. Absolutely.
You have a voice inside of you that sounds more mature and can even improve with age no matter how old you are. The problem is you don’t know where it is – but it is in there. I guarantee it. I can’t tell you the hundreds of women with whom I have worked who have found their ‘real’ voice and then seen their life improve dramatically.

121. Your Speaking Voice: One Heck of a Powerful Tool!

Are you aware of how powerful a tool you could have in your speaking voice? Think about those voices which make you stop and listen. These voices grab your attention because they have depth and breadth – they are warm, rich, deep, and resonant.

123. If You Can Read the Paragraph Below With Expression, You've Got Color!
June 03, 2014
One of the exercises I provide for my clients is to read a nonsense paragraph, making it interesting for the listeners by means of color and tone. Color refers to the vocal variety in your voice as well as your facial and body language. Tone, on the other hand, deals with the vocal expression of a particular mood or attitude which is dependent on your subject or topic. Video record yourself as you read the following paragraph.
