Uh-Oh: Mischief in the Miniature Garden!

Gardening
It is an age-old adage, but it is true. Laughter is good for the soul. These days, I am keeping my eyes wide open for jokes, tricks, moments of whimsy, and split seconds of silliness. Laughter keeps me going when the days are tough and the skies are grey. If your heart has been hurting this year, perhaps you could use a good chuckle. April Fool’s Day may have passed, but there are always opportunities for a little mischief in the miniature garden.

Making Messes

Peer through the miniature plants’ green leaves and duck under the branches of the miniature trees. Through the meadow and over the bridge is where you will find the veggie patch. The vegetables are usually planted in perfect rows, but it looks like someone has torn through the row of carrots! Look, there—a hole in the white picket fence. Has Peter Rabbit returned to cause mischief? Have the gnomes been playing a game of chicken in the wheelbarrows again? Look closely, and you might just spot some footprints in the mud…

On the Hunt

When something goes wrong in the miniature garden, finding the culprit can be a delightful game. Garden visitors of all ages enjoy spotting tricks, clues, and mystery moments. What else could be off in the miniature garden? Perhaps a mermaid hid some treasure on the beach, or a troll is lurking under the bridge. Silly scenes like these instantly add a sense of story and magic to the fairy garden.

To build suspense, try creating teeny-tiny footprints in some wet mud. Or leave a trail of fairy dust that stretches from the picnic table, where someone seems to have stolen a pie, all the way to the pixie hideout. Some forgotten berries or unwashed dishes could help garden visitors solve the mystery.

For the youngest gardeners, it can be fun to create an interactive game. You just need to ask one leading question, like “A fairy is missing! Can you find him?” or “Can you find all three gnomes?” Like a racecar, that little one will be zooming to find the missing miniature garden friend. If you recently added a new beach or sandy lakeside to your fairy garden, you could introduce it by creating a path of lost seashells. Follow the shells, and visitors will find the “buried treasure.” A new sandy spot for the fairies (and humans) to enjoy!

A Sweet Surprise

Games can also be a fun way to introduce new characters to the miniature garden. Each day, add a new accessory as a hint. Maybe a witch’s hat appears one day. A broom is found leaning against the fairy cottage. On the last day, a witch is discovered hiding under the spooky miniature tree.

Do not tell my family, but I sometimes use miniature plants to tell stories of mischief in the garden. If I over-prune my miniature tree, I can add a mini dragon to the scene and make sure his mouth is open wide. It will look as though he just finished blowing flames all over my leafless miniature tree! At the end of the season, when my flowering miniature plants are losing their petals, I add a fairy who looks as though she is plucking the petals off or shaking the tree. Who overwatered the miniature plants? Not me!

If your miniature garden has fewer fairies and more miniature plants, you can still craft a silly scavenger hunt. Just write some simple clues that lead to the sweetest surprise of all. A new miniature plant! You could “plant” the clues on tiny signs, stick them to paving stones, or share them out-loud with garden visitors. A richly-colored Peperomia, a sunny Philodendron, or the curvy and cute Corkscrew Rush might be just the thing to put a smile on your face this season.

Miniature Gardening' offers miniature plants, accessories, fairies, garden tools & dollhouse furniture to create enchanting miniature landscapes for containers or your yard. Story telling and imaginary fairy garden from 'Miniature Gardening' bring the playful kid out in all of us. Filled with intrigue and mystique each little miniature garden scene you create is a snapshot of such a dream.
