May 24, 2018

Alongside such developments as Artificial Intelligence, telematics are seen as a new wave of smart technologies that are revolutionising how transport companies operate. Telematics have changed the central concern of the haulage industry: whereas the broad objective of reducing fuel usage was once the main goal, driving style has now become the predominant focus. This has been aided by the development of technology that measures the driving style of delivery work drivers in order to reward efficiency. For the haulage industry, this development is beginning to show four key advantages which wil... (read more)

2. More Tax Breaks for Cleaner HGVs on the Roads
May 24, 2018

The UK government has signalled a tax overhaul for the HGV industry to be implemented by February 2019. This will see environmentally-friendly HGVs rewarded and older models punished. These reforms will be made through the Heavy Goods Levy to ensure that all haulage work uses the cleanest lorries available to the mass market. The government plans to implement a tax rate change to HGVs. The new standard will see lorries that meet the latest Euro VI emissions target given a 10% discount on the HGV Road User Levy. These greener lorries will face a charge of £900 instead of the previous £1000... (read more)

May 04, 2018

In the past decade, technology has played an invaluable role in the efficient and effective management of haulage work and freight forwarding. You may already be using telematics and tracking systems, but one of the most important pieces of technology that you should invest in is a dashboard camera. The latest 3G cameras, an upgrade on the older SD versions, roll constantly, providing high-quality footage of drivers’ conduct. By providing a visible record of their behaviour on the road, these cameras have been invaluable in increasing driver safety and liability. They also offer a variety o... (read more)

8. Communities and Lorry Drivers Need More Dialogue
May 04, 2018

There has been discussion in the road transport sector recently regarding how to deal with truck weight breaches on the road. Some associations are questioning the traditional approach of imposing heavy fines. Local Councils Set to Introduce Fines Local councils tend to impose heavy fines on haulage workers who are caught breaching their weight limit. The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has initiated a debate by proposing that this might not be the best way to deter this sort of behaviour, and they have proposed some alternatives. They feel that fining lorry drivers would be too pu... (read more)

9. Benefits for Fleet Managers from Fuel Consumption Regulations
May 04, 2018

A new European law is set to be introduced to the United Kingdom, which will affect haulage companies throughout the country. While its primary purpose is to protect the environment, it will also indirectly give fleet managers the opportunity to accurately assess a vehicle’s potential fuel consumption before purchase. This in turn will incentivise manufacturers to produce a truck that burns minimal fuel. The New Law The law requires truck manufacturers to produce vehicles with reduced levels of fuel consumption, as well as reduced CO2 emissions. What’s more, the government will requi... (read more)

In my last article, ‘The Owner Operators’ Guide to Managing Fuel Costs: Part 1’, I discussed two methods of buying fuel for those engaged in haulage jobs. The second option, Fuel Cards, had monitoring issues, as well as fees payable to the oil company. Today I am going to look at the money-saving potential of Bunker Fuel Cards. What is a Bunker Card? A Bunker Card is similar to a fuel card, as it only permits a driver to purchase diesel or pe... (read more)
