How To Halve Your Cancer Risk

Health,Fitness,Food & Beverages
Did you know that vitamin D influences about 10 percent of your genes? Even more surprising is that 90 percent of breast cancer may in fact be related to vitamin D deficiency.° Suffice to say it’s very important. I’ll show you why and how you can ensure you’re getting enough vitamin D to avoid cancer.

How Vitamin D Affects You

Calcium absorption – Vitamin D is known to help the absorption of calcium so it promotes strong and healthy bones. Deficiency can lead to rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults which is the softening of bones due to defective bone mineralisation. Both diseases make bones weak, fragile and misshapen. Disease prevention – The importance of vitamin D is still being studied but current medical research shows that a deficiency is linked to a number of diseases such as: Cancer - breast, colon and prostate cancers. Cardiovascular disease Autoimmune disease Depression – Seasonal Affective Disorder is a state of depression occurring in areas with little or no sunshine. Obesity – studies have showed a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and increased weight gain. Support healthy immune system – Vitamin D helps fight infections including the cold and flu.

Cancer’s Worst Enemy

According to Joseph Mercola, theories linking vitamin D deficiency to cancer have been tested and confirmed in more than 200 epidemiological studies and understanding of its physiological basis stems from more than 2,500 laboratory studies.¹ In a research study published in 2007 by Lappe et.al. showed that after four years of follow up, there was a 77 percent cancer risk reduction in women who received 1,100 IUs of vitamin D and 1,450 mg calcium per day and achieved a serum level of approximately 40 ng/ml.²

Another study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine concluded that a serum 25(OH)D level of more than 33 ng/mL was associated with a 50 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer.³ These are just two examples out of numerous other studies but so far it sounds fairly promising to me.

Women Need To Know This

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women so any evidence to suggest that it can be prevented naturally would be music to the ears right? Well I’ve got great news.

Elevated vitamin D levels in women has shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer deaths by half!ˆ Dr Cedric Garland, professor at the University of California has found that vitamin D affects the structure of cells in nearly all forms of breast cancer. According to Garland, these cells are held together by a substance called e-cadherin which is mainly comprised of vitamin D and calcium. When e-cadherin is lacking, the cells do what they’re programmed to do – multiply, and this is where you may end up with cancer. So the answer to stopping breast cancer in its tracks is vitamin D.

How To Get More Vitamin D

The vast majority of us spend all day cooped up in an office so the chances are you’re probably deficient. We all know that you can get vitamin D from the sun and I believe that’s the best way. But how do you know when the best time is? Not to worry, there’s an app for that! D-Minder takes into account your local weather conditions, skin tone and diet it will work out whether you’re deficient and when is the best time to get in the sun.

If exposure to the sun is not a lasting solution, vitamin D supplements are your next best bet. If you’re looking for a good vitamin D supplement, be sure to find vitamin D3 with vitamin K2. Be aware that vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is not the type produced by your body when it’s exposed to sun, vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is. Vitamin K2 has an important role in moving calcium into areas where it’s needed most, such as your bones and teeth.

Bearing this in mind, make sure you take advantage of the sun this summer and help fight cancer the natural way!
