What Now? Thoughts On How To Live The Second Half Of Your Life

What Now? Thoughts On How To Live The Second Half Of Your Life

At a time in human history in which more people are passing the age of 50 than ever before, it is surely useful to ask whether many of our longstanding perceptions of middle and old age are fair.

In the process, we may also consider what we can do to live more rewarding lives as many of us advance to an age that may not have been reached by our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.

There Really Can Be Life After 50

A century or so ago, the average life expectancy was under 50, meaning that those living to their 50s, 60s and beyond were not sufficiently numerous to be a great cultural force. Those days have long gone, meaning that the typical 50-year-old today can look forward to many years and decades more of living in reasonable health.

However, while the objectives for the first half of your life may have been obvious – to strive, achieve, build a nest and provide – the way to live the second half of your life may be far from clear to you. Thankfully, there can be many such ‘ways’, as those undergoing Life Transition Counselling can be enabled to discover.

Many people approaching the second half of their lives come to see me having lost their sense of purpose; they dismiss whatever it was they did believing ‘It’s over, it’s all in the past.’ But while the first half of life may be behind you, the second half of life - a period of change, transition and transformation that can be truly enriching - is only just beginning.

So, What May You Be Tempted To Do Into Your Middle And Old Age?

That, of course, is very much a question that can only be answered by you – albeit, potentially with the help of the right life transition counselling from a suitably qualified and experienced professional.

You may, for example, be tempted to make a big career move; while many people over 50 downshift into lower-pressure roles, others take the opportunity to embark on a whole new career, or the logical next step in a long-running one.

Alternatively, you may elect to move to another town, city or even country, or devote yourself to a hobby – such as arts, crafts or writing – that you have long dreamed of having more time to do. You could start a business, or begin or end a relationship or friendship in readiness for a new and enthralling chapter of your life.

Really, there are infinite possibilities for learning new skills or applying those you already have to life in your middle and older years. After all, we only live one life and the last thing that we should be doing is just letting it slip by, however old we may now happen to be.

Contact me, Tamar Posner, today to receive the life transition counselling that could help you to get so much more out of the coming years and decades of your life, with the benefit of contemplation, planning and preparation.
