If you want to attain enlightenment or have a spiritual awakening, there are two main factors you need to follow. The first step to enlightenment is to have the spiritual realization that you are pure awareness and then to immerse yourself in that experience of pure awareness. Although it is good to intellectually understand that you are awareness, that in itself will not lead you to enlightenment. You have to first realize through self inquiry or witness consciousness that you are consciousness itself. In the practice of self-inquiry you keep turning your attention back upon itself. You may ask “who am I?” or “what is consciousness?” to help bring your attention back to what is here prior to thinking and then feel that. At first you may only experience yourself as awareness for a half of a second before getting involved in thoughts again but through practice you will be able to experience yourself as pure awareness more and more. In witnessing, you allow thoughts to come but you witness them instead of being involved with them. You first do this by allowing thoughts to come and go. You consciously relinquish the thoughts as they come. You don’t resist them, you passively do not hold on to them. Then you will get to a state where you see thoughts arise and vanish by themselves while you rest in your natural state of pure awareness. You are aware thinking happening but you remain uninvolved. Both of these practices will lead to the first step of enlightenment where you realize directly without a doubt that you are consciousness itself. That you exist completely free from the mind and body as awareness itself. The second step is to remain in this realization. Because thinking will pull you out of this realization over and over. So meditation is the practice of remaining in this state of pure awareness for longer durations until that experience of being pure consciousness becomes your dominant experience. These practices above are perfect to attain enlightenment or have a spiritual awakening but they are not complete. This second factor is needed. And the second factor is Shaktipat . Shaktipat is spiritual energy. You could call it grace, you could call it deeksha. It is the energy of pure awareness. It is consciousness in the form of energy. And it is has the full intelligence to transform and awaken you into enlightenment. You can actually feel Shakti as a vibration, as bliss, as peace, as love or as a nurturing energy. But it is the Shaktipat itself which causes spiritual awakening, which lets you reach enlightenment. When you receive it, you can actually feel shaktipat awakening every part of your body and mind into unconditional bliss and love. When you receive Shaktipat you should give it your complete attention by feeling the subtle sensations you feel in the body. You begin to be able to immerse your attention in the sensation of Shakti. You may need to purify your body and mind especially through correct diet and physical exercise and perhaps also through yoga techniques like breathing/prana exercises, chanting and japa. It will be different for everyone what is needed so it is best to intuitively feel for yourself. There are two methods to receive Shaktipat. The main method is through an enlightened Guru. By being in the presence of an enlightened guru, you receive Shaktipat and easily enter deep states of meditation and bliss. The second way is through sound. Through advances in studio technology, Shakti can be recorded and turned into sound. The great thing about this is you can enjoy this blissful energy in your own home or wherever you go.
