Preparing for a Flood

Home Business

While not always the case, some floods can be predicted. Because of advancements in technology and weather forecasting, oftentimes you can be warned before a flood hits. While you can call a company who specializes in water removal in Marietta to help you after the fact, there are things you can do to prepare beforehand. Once you receive the warning that rising waters are heading your way, do you know what to do next?

  1. Stay tuned in. If your region has received a weather alert, be sure to keep listening. Jump into action the moment that you have received an alert that a flood is imminent. Pay attention to your surroundings until you’re notified that the threat has passed.
  2. Gather your emergency supplies. It’s always a good idea to have supplies prepared in case of an emergency. Be sure to have clean drinking water on hand, as well as food that doesn’t require cooking or refrigeration. Keep an envelope of cash nearby and any medications that you might need. To make things easier, always have these things packed in a backpack, ready to grab. You’ll also want clothes, toiletries, batteries, flashlights, and a radio. All personal information should be stowed safely inside your pack, too. If you have multiple members of your family that you’re in charge of, be sure that each of them has a pack as well. This will make evacuating easy and seamless should a flood head your way.
  3. Know where to go. In the event that you are evacuated from your home, make sure that you have a list of places that you and your family can go. Having multiple places will ensure that you’ll be safe should the flood be blocking one of the access points to your shelter point. If you have pets, decide how you will transport them, too. It’s best to keep a tank of gas on hand in the event that you are unable to stop and refuel before the waters begin to rise.
  4. Make sure that your family is aware of what to do. Even if you have a flood plan in place, it does you no good unless your family is on board. In the event of a flood, your family needs to know where to meet if you are separated. They also need to know where to seek shelter in the event that you can’t meet up.
  5. Protect your belongings. Quickly gather pictures and any other mementos that you want to keep safe before leaving the home. If you have time before evacuating, move all of your valuable items and furniture to higher levels. It’s also a good idea to move paint, pesticides, and cleaning supplies up higher, too. This will keep them from draining into the water and causing contamination problems down the line. Disconnect all electronic devices and appliances. Then, seal off all entrances to your home. If you have any furniture or grills outside your home, bring them inside. Otherwise they could end up floating away.

A flood is a terrifying natural disaster that can wreak havoc on your home and neighborhood. Once it’s over, you could be feeling overwhelmed by the devastation. While your home may have sustained damage, there are ways to recuperate what was lost. Hiring a company to handle the water removal in Marietta is a great place to start. Then, contact your insurance company to file a claim. While your home may have been damaged by the water, preparing beforehand for a flood will ensure that you and your loved ones are safe in the wake of a natural disaster.
