Silicone Sealant Forms A Strong Water Resistant Seal

Home Improvement
Silicone sealant is a rubbery, man-made substance used to create seals. It is non-toxic, water proof, and flexible and is used in clothes, cooking items, and electronic equipment. In fact, many people use it instead of adhesive and makes a better barrier than caulking. It also lasts for many years and is easy to clean if it gets dirty.

Silicone is a synthetic substance that is very similar to rubber. It has the ability to form watertight seal, has low toxicity, and, while it does not stick well, it does adhere to glass and metals when properly prepared. There are no significant safety or health problems with this substance and is cleared for use in nearly every industry.

Silicones are heat resistant to around 300 degrees and cold resistant to about -55 degrees F. When applied it makes a strong rubbery seal that adheres to tile, glass, and metal. It usually dries in a day but is not completely cured for about a week. The seal is permanently flexible, strong, and resistant to tears, heat, and moisture. It also lasts for many years before replacement.

Cooking products, clothing manufacturers, and construction companies all rely upon sealants. Also, computer chips are often covered with it. It has a few adhesive properties but is generally more of a filler than a glue. The product could be better than putty and caulks if you need a moisture resistant barrier.

Of course, there are surfaces that resist any seals. Coated glass and metal are two of these. Experts recommend that for these surfaces you conduct a test before starting a project. Once the barrier is in place it is difficult to remove so you should ensure the seal is right before it starts to dry. Once it has dried completely it can be washed, even with a power wash.

If the product gets into your eyes it could cause serious problems; if this happens then flush your eyes completely. Since it is a chemical, you should treat it with care though. Store it in a dry place where children cannot access it. If ingested make sure to call a doctor for treatment. Once dried, this product is hard to remove so remember this when applying it.

The product comes in easy to use cartridges for people that are using it in home projects. It also comes in large drums when you have a large project. Make sure you clean and dry the items before application as this will create the best barrier. If you are using it on glass this is especially important. Even fingerprints and dust can cause it not to adhere. You can purchase many forms of this product including, cure in place, lubricating grease, rubber, free flow, and gasketing.

Silicone sealant is great if you need to put joints together, especially metal or coated glass. It comes in tubes, cartridges, and drums. You will need to prepare the surface before application. It is excellent for usage in nearly every type of project that requires a tight, waterproof seal.
