It is that time of the year again when some people love it and some people hate it. Either way it is December and Xmas along with a New Year are upon us yet again. We all seem surprised when it gets here even though it does get here every year so really it is not a surprise at all. Why does it strike a bit of fear into everyone? Whether you are man, woman or child there is always a worry with it. Children want the right presents and they spend weeks worrying if they have been good enough for Santa and they won't really know till they wake up Xmas Day but for the most part good or bad they do get what they want. In the times we are living in today parents are genuinely worried they can't provide a great Xmas due to the economy and rush out credit cards in hand and spend. Then spend the next twelve months paying for it and before you know it is that time of year again so it becomes a vicious circle except that every year that goes by the kids get older and the presents get more expensive. I have five adult children and along with a new great granddaughter I have eight grandchildren so for me personally it is a challenge. I did give up the fight a few years ago and just hand everyone money which is a lot easier for me but somewhere along the line they all got gift bags as well. This year has been a hard on as it has for so many people so no money just gift bags. I am well know in my circle and family for my Boxing Day buffet which is more like a wedding reception buffet but alas not this year. We jointly agreed I will do lasagne, salad and garlic bread and the only concession is that I will bake cupcakes and a red velvet cake. It is a sad state of affairs when we can't even buy what we want at this special time of the year but I look at it this way to be honest my kids were happy with what we had back in the seventies and eighties. We did not have much but we laughed and we had fun. We made our decorations and no one felt they were being short changed. It was great.I am not a present person but instead of lots of small presents my family all put into the pot and have bought one fantastic present from all of them. Yes I do know in advance which is cheating but I am over the moon as they have bought me an EVO 2 ceiling fan with a light and remote. Obviously I must have been a good mum to warrant that for Xmas but if anyone wants my advice then please know that kids can survive without the latest electronic gadget but can't survive without love and nurturing so don't kill yourselves with worry and financial stress just love them and you will be surprised at the reward that will bring you.
