Operating crane particularly tower crane is a tough job , because of the height of operation and weight of crane . Crane’s operator need to work very cautiously, follow the guidelines and SOP of the construction zone. There are various aspects in the operation, in this article we will discuss some important aspects of crane operation .Starting with the factors associated to the crane. Weather Conditions: Weather conditions affect the working of crane, wind speed /direction, temperature situation, fumes around the site and other related factors all of them need to be given preference in operation. Also, if there is high a traffic density around the site and if area around the crane is congested then crane operation is normally carried out in those times when there is low pressure. Co-ordination between the Crew: Operation of crane is a team job, a lot accidents happen due to careless operation of hoist, crane and due to the placement. Thus, a detailed co-ordination procedure should be decided and followed by the operator and the crew. Load Limit and Warning Devices: When load is to be lifted by the crane then it should be within the crane’s limit also the proper hooking of load is also important. Warning devices should also be installed in the crane, which signals the nearby staff regarding crane operation , also since there are significant noises on the construction zone , thus through the help of warning signals any accident can be avoided. Working Area: Working area the crane should be clear and no obstacles should be present .Working crew should use all the safety gadgets. Operator cab should be cleaned and maintained. Operator Training: Tower crane operator should be well trained and certified. Having experience regarding crane operation is also important, because is something which cannot be time it is only gained in time. Operator should pay complete attention while operating the crane; any carelessness may lead to a accident. With changing technology and regulating standards , operator information need to be refreshed over the period of time through conducting different training sessions . Regular inspection before each operation is extremely essential, as it helps operator to identify the necessary repair needed over the time. If during operation, operator identifies some serious or minor issue, then it should be immediately tackled through.
