With the countdown for Diwali having already begun, it is high time to get started with this year’s Diwali preparations. For your convenience I have compiled a list of some of the most important things to do before your fabulous Diwali party. Here they are: • Cleaning – While we all get cleaning done in our houses every day, cleaning before Diwali is a different thing altogether. It is not your regular surface level cleaning but a thorough cleaning of the whole house. Every nook and corner is cleaned and made ready for the decorations to be done later. In the effort to make their homes look almost new, many people get them re-painted and white-washed. Whereas those who are unable to do such things content themselves with exhaustive cleaning. One would ask why all this fuss over cleaning. Well the answer to this resides in a popular belief. As Diwali is known to be not only the festival of lights but of prosperity and wealth too, many people believe that Goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, comes into their homes on Diwali night and hence to please her, they try to keep their homes as neat, clean and welcoming as possible. • Decorating – This has to be one of the most essential parts of any Diwali celebration. Whether the person celebrating Diwali lives in a huge mansion or in a small hut, he will definitely try to decorate his home in whatever manner possible. Wherever you go, you will find houses beautifully bedecked with colorful lights, earthen lamps, candles, flowers etc. These things are the essence of Diwali decoration. However, you can try out a few different things this year to add a special touch to your ornamentation. Instead of only using earthen lamps you could try using a couple of oil burners. Oil burners are one of the most beautiful products of not only home decoration but home aromatization as well. The oil burner adds a wonderful soft glow to its surroundings while spreading a gentle fragrance into the environment. Hence, making it a must-use item for parties, get-to get hers, festivals and special occasions and so on. A somewhat similar effect can be obtained through scented candles as well. They also make a place look and smell heavenly. So this year, try to combine your earthen lamps and regular candles, with oil burners and scented candles to beautify your decorations even further. • Purchasing & Packing Gifts – Gifts are another very important part of Diwali festivities as they are a way of expressing not only our love and affection for our kith and kin but also a way of showing our appreciation and gratitude towards other people and strengthening ties with them. Hence, the practice of gifting is deeply embedded in Diwali celebrations. However, giving anything and everything is not what this custom is about. On the contrary it is about gifting not only useful but thoughtful and meaningful gifts too. Therefore, gift selection should be done with a lot of care. Some of the most common Diwali gifts are eatable like dry-fruits, traditional Indian sweets, cakes and chocolates; home decor pieces like paintings, wall hangings, lamps, showpieces; utility items like bed sheets, blankets, utensils, crockery, cutlery; home fragrance products like reed diffusers, aroma oil burners, scented candles, potpourri; home appliances like juicer mixer grinders, rice cookers, steam irons, electric kettles, OTG’s; electronic goods like television sets, DVD players, mobile phones, DSLR cameras and so on and so forth. However, purchasing the perfect diwali gift is not all, getting it nicely packed and attractively wrapped, to make a good impression on the recipient, is equally important too – as first impression is the last impression. • Inviting Guests – No Diwali party can be complete without good company. After all Diwali is all about bringing loved ones together and is therefore, most enjoyed when spent in the company of near and dear ones. So, sending out invites to family members and friends is very important. However, before you do that it is essential to make a list of all the people you want to invite so as to not miss out on anyone. Also make sure to invite people much in advance so that accordingly arrangements can be made. • Preparing Special Meals – Food is obviously an essential part of our everyday life but it becomes all the more important during festive times. Whether you are having a grand Diwali party or just a small family celebration, eating good food is essential as it makes the occasion special. We eat all sorts of food everyday but festivals give us an opportunity to eat something totally different, something we don’t eat on a regular basis. It could be anything - a traditional dish or a different cuisine altogether. Good food makes people happy and thus makes occasions even more special and pleasurable. Just remember to include enough variety to suit everyone’s taste and liking and you would do great. There you go. Follow this simple check-list and your Diwali party is sure to be a grand success. So what are you waiting for? Start preparing now and have a rocking Diwali!
