Hollywood regency décor is a dramatic way to decorate that incorporates the clean lines of modern furniture with some vintage pieces thrown in the mix. The décor centers on entertaining so the furnishings are generally small-scale that let people in the room be the focus and not the furnishings. Elegant chairs and beautiful simple sofas are often outlined against window walls of plush velvet or drapes of silk. Rooms are usually accented with heavily ornate mirrors, antiques, artifacts, Chinese vases, Art Deco fabric patterns and bamboo accents. Hollywood Regency décor uses accessories that are generally very theatrical such as extra-tall white plaster floor lamps with palm fronds, satin or velvet fainting couches and mirrored dressing tables. Mirrored and lacquered surfaces sparkle adding to the glitzy Hollywood look. Hollywood Regency décor can partially be attributed to the influences of William Haines, a leading man and set designer with MGM Studios as well as Dorothy Draper, a designer that had a flair for the dramatic. Besides being an actor, Mr. Haines had an antique business in Hollywood in the 30’s and loved to help many of his friends in the movie industry with their interior design. He had terrific taste and was greatly influenced by Modernism so used a lot of clean-lined upholstery pieces to decorate along with some vintage pieces that he loved. In addition, he really liked to accessorize with interesting things from all over the world to make a room unique. His interiors were photographed and copied by designers from all over. They are still being copied and enjoyed today by many people. Dorothy Draper designed interiors with over scaled and brightly colored versions of classic traditional rooms. She loved to accent huge white plaster moldings with walls in bright colors of green, yellow, coral and bright blue. The wing chairs and sofas had huge designs of flowers on the fabric making them look old fashioned but fun and modern at the same time. Her advice on design always focused on how to live in the home and entertain. The Hollywood Regency look can be achieved today by using a lot of bright colors such as turquoise, apple green, yellow and Chinese red. Add a little bit of shine with lacquered paint finishes on furniture or walls. Create graphic contrast by placing black or white furnishings against a bright colored wall. Furniture should be simple in design but keep in mind; a room full of plain surfaces will look too modern. Reupholster a chair in a huge floral print or have throw pillows in a graphic design.
