Flooding is a serious problem in many areas which is why it is best to avoid flood-prone areas and locations when buying or building a house. However, there are times when you may not be able to avoid having to build a house in a flood-prone location for whatever reason. In such cases, it is best to make the most out of the property by implementing and applying some of the tips listed below. Concrete Slabs. One choice for the foundation of your home is to use solid concrete slabs. These will help keep your home well grounded and secure on its foundation. If you look at a lot of house and lot for sale in the Philippines, concrete slabs are also typically used in houses but the quality of the concrete slab becomes even more important in flood-prone areas. Stilts. An option that will provide you with higher elevation is to put your house on stilts or suspended floors. Estimate the average level of flood water levels in the area and use this as a guide in determining the height of the floor of your house. Make sure that the stilts you make are solid and very strong. You may use concrete slabs for the stilts. Unfortunately, very few Philippine properties are on stilts which would have been a good solution to houses that are in areas that experience minor flooding. Bricks. Engineering bricks are good materials that you can use in houses that are located in flood-prone areas because they are virtually waterproof. However, avoid using handmade brick because they are very absorbent. PVC. It is best to use PVC in fixtures that are likely to be reached by floodwaters such as in doors, door frames, and window frames. It would be even better if your doors and windows have excellent locking and sealing mechanisms. Stainless steel. It is a must that you use stainless steel in the bathrooms, kitchen, and other areas where you need to use exposed steel. Using regular steel will only make it prone to rusting and corrosion especially if floods occur frequently. Place sockets higher. Although sockets are typically placed near the floor, this is not advisable if you know that the house has a risk of being flooded. What you can do is to discreetly place the sockets as high as reasonably reachable to avoid them from getting wet by flood waters.
