158. Islamic Gold Dinar: The Historical Standard
August 07, 2012
Abstract Lately, there have been questions on what the standards for gold dinar and silver dirham are. August 07, 2012
I refer to the letter “Gold dinar impractical” (The Star, July 6) where Goh Hoe Hoe of Penang argued that the gold dinar initiative by the Kelantan government as impractical. However given the current global monetary and economic crisis faced by the world, significantly due to the effects of the dollar and euro crises, it is worthwhile to give the gold dinar i... 169. Why the Ten Commandments Should Be Reduced to Six — and Probably Rewritten
July 18, 2012
by Philip Yaffe
Almost like clockwork, controversy regularly erupts over whether or not the biblical Ten Commandments (Decalogue) should be posted in courthouses, schools, city halls, state houses, Congress, etc. Proponents of posting the Ten Commandments claim that they provide the moral foundation of western civilization; opponents say that posting them in public (tax-supported) places is an illegitimate intrusion of religion into secular life.
Separation of church and state is probably more deeply woven in the constitutional fabric of the United States than in many other countries... (read more)

171. A Month for Spiritual Enlightenment
July 15, 2012
Before delving into the basic philosophy of the month, let us see when is Ramadan 2012? Ramadan falls between July 21st and August 19th, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. However, an important issue here is the sighting of the new moon. Ramadan always begins and ends with seeing the crescent or the new moon. But the moon, after rising in the East will take almost a day to go across the globe to the western world. Logically then, the date of Ramadan should vary across the globe. But in reality it is not so. Though a part of the Muslim population does take the physical sighting into accou... (read more)

Love and Marriage
Love and marriage are two words of vital import to the average young man or woman. They represent, in any case, the most important events in the life of practically every human being.
