Do you have fond memories of an historic street? Taken a liking to a certain Park Ave. sign? Yearn for your days living in Beverly Hills.? If you’ve ever wanted to own a piece of your streetscape, or feel what it’s like to visit an iconic street with history, then I have an idea for you. Partake in your towns’ yard sale event and you might just find your ideal road sign for sale. City and town councils have held meetings, where persons have put forward motions to create programs that would allow citizens to buy decommissioned street signs for a few dollars each. Clearly nostalgia for the old signage is lucrative these days and certain streets and certain neighborhoods in certain locations have a real cliché people that speak the history of a city. Folks love their hometown. Why wouldn’t they want to put up a 7th St. Sign on their wall or on their door? It is not expected that thousands of people would look for road sign for sale, but when you see one sign going down, you might say, ‘I grew up on that street’ or ‘I met wife while walking down that street.’ Much to the dismay of local history buffs, various cities began replacing their various old signs with a standard design in 2009. The new blue-and-white versions are high on visibilitybut low on charm, particularly compared to the classic “acorn” design, which is so beloved it has its own Facebook page. Luckily neighborhoods deemed to have heritage value were given an exemptions. Good for you history buffs. There's no city-wide replacement program, but crews from transportation services swap out between 2,000 and 2,500 signs a year as they fall into disrepair, and right now they all go to the scrap heap. Instead, councils wants them stored for one year and made available for order by phone and via a city website. Those that aren’t sold once the year is up would be recycled as usual. At $10-$20 a pop, they estimate the city would break even on the cost of collecting and storing the signs. To prevent confusion, purchasers would sign a waiver promising not to display the signs on city streets. The program would be a first for many but some cities have been selling their old street signs since 2001 when the amalgamation of 11 different municipalities forced the new megacity to rename many streets to prevent duplicates. Thepopulation jumped at the chance to own souvenirs of roads that were being wiped from the map. While some council men says residents have expressed interest in the idea, they are not overly optimistic it will get council approval. Because the motion will require a two-thirds majority just to get on the agenda. If it doesn’t, it will be referred back to the public works committee, which could bury the idea indefinitely. If it does win support however, council men says they will be looking for road sign for sale of various streets from their childhood.
