276. How to make your date run off faster than by saying "I love you" on the first date
February 01, 2021
Oh boy, I got something juicy for you today.
I was listening to one of my go-to podcasts yesterday and I heard this funny story.
Listen to this:
One of the podcast host’s friends entered the online dating game, and she went on a date with someone she met.
Unfortunately, it didn’t go well and she came home irritated.
What happened was, this guy that she went on a first date with bombarded her with obnoxious questions. It was far from casual.
He asked her questions that you’d find in a Buzzfeed “Deep questions to ask your date” type of article. That includes asking ... (read more)

277. A customer took a retail store's guarantee policy in the most literal way possible
January 29, 2021
To end this great week off, let me share a funny story that happened a while back.
When I exercise, I like to take supplements, BCAAs and whey protein. And I buy both of those at a GNC store near my house.
One day, I went to the store to buy another container of BCAA powder.
While the cashier was ringing the item up, we were having a nice conversation.
He was telling me how GNC has a guarantee. If you buy anything from the store, use it, and you aren’t satisfied with it, then you can return it and get a refund.
Then he told me a story of a former customer who took that... (read more)

278. The A to Z of Email Copywriting
January 28, 2021
Usually when you see the title, “The A to Z of ___,” it means a complete beginner’s guide to whatever topic that it’s about.
But I decided to do something a little fun and take the title and make a literal A to Z email copywriting guide.
And so, the following was created.
Enjoy.
Action is the very first step.
Be your best self.
Copying others is a big no-no.
Don’t forget to always promote something.
Exceptions? There are none.
Forget about the unwritten rules.
Grab a timer before you start writing.
Have it set to 25 minutes.
Initiate ... (read more)

279. If At First You Don't Succeed
January 27, 2021
With the exception of young prodigies, chances are, when you try a new skill for the first time, the end results will be pretty ugly. If that upsets you and you expected perfection on your first attempt, then you, my friend, might be dealing with one of the criminals from the Imposter Syndrome Organization, the Gruesome Genius. If you read that article, then you know what I’m talking about. But if that doesn’t upset you, then you understand that it’s a perfectly natural process. For example, here are some of my first failed attempts: Art Going back to Halloween 2020, I... (read more)

280. Blast to the Past of My Untold Network Marketing History
January 26, 2021
In the past, I talked a little bit about network marketing.
But thinking about it now, I don’t think I ever mentioned that I was part of a network marketing company at one point in my life.
World Financial Group.
However, I signed up under someone who ran a company under a different name. It’ll take a bit of time to explain that, so I’m not going to.
But here’s what I do want to talk about.
During my training, my supervisor encouraged me to attend as many networking events as I possibly can.
He handed me a stack of business cards and told me this specific instruct... (read more)

281. What the Wrong Email Marketing Questions Are That You Shouldn't Be Asking
January 25, 2021
I see this question so many times on the Internet.
Forums, social media posts, you name it.
“What’s the best email marketing software to use?” Or I see variants of this question like,
“What’s the best email marketing software for non-profits?”
“Which service is better, this or that?”
To be honest, I think those are the wrong questions to ask. From what I’ve seen and used, they all function the same. The only differences are their pricing, the software names, their quirks, and unique features.
For example,
GetResponse has a feature where you can create your ow... (read more)

282. Am I the Only One Who Has Had Thoughts About This Issue?
January 22, 2021
Not too long ago, I came across a rather entertaining video about self-love.
It touched upon the concept of learning to love yourself first before you start to love others.
And it makes sense.
When you learn to love yourself, accept your good, insecure, and quirky sides, then you’d most likely be open to do the same for others as well.
But here’s where the video gets interesting.
It made me think about this whole concept from a whole new perspective that I never thought possible.
Loving others better teaches you how to love yourself, which also makes sense.
I... (read more)

283. The Case of Social Justice Enthusiasts Going Too Far
January 21, 2021
Let’s go back to June 2nd, 2020.
If you’re a social justice enthusiast, then you may be familiar with that date.
If not, it’s also known as Blackout Tuesday. A day to protest against racism and police brutality by posting a pitch black picture on social media.
But as you may already know, this whole protest lasted for more than just one day.
On that date, I even wrote an email about this. I’m not going to paste the entire email here, so I’ll sum it up as short as I can.
I used to post content on Instagram. Basically, I was deciding whether or not I should post my regul... (read more)

284. How an Invite-only Social Platform Become Popular So Quickly
January 20, 2021
If you’re like me, a person who lives under a rock but still knows what’s going on in the world (Somewhat), then you’ve probably heard of this new platform called Clubhouse.
If you haven’t, it’s a new social platform that’s strictly audio only.
I first read about it on an email newsletter from a creatives network group that I’m a part of.
Apparently, you can only have access to the app if you receive an invitation from an inside user.
So I decided to look into it.
And I found out that it is an invitation only app. Otherwise, if you sign up, you’ll be put on a waiting l... (read more)

285. The 5 Most Wanted Criminals From the Imposter Syndrome Organization
January 19, 2021
Attention fellow reader of Ellisen Wang’s article.
It has come to my knowledge that there are some very dangerous criminals on the loose.
Now these are not the typical kinds of criminals you hear about. You know, the ones that rob houses, banks and whatnot.
They’re all part of an underground organization called the Imposter Syndrome.
They invade your mind causing you to think in a self-destructive way.
If you sense them, do not, I repeat, do not engage without proper support.
To arm you with knowledge and give you a heads-up on what you’re up against, here is a li... (read more)

286. How to Play the Client Acquisition Game on Easy Mode
January 18, 2021
Over the weekend, I caught up with a friend whom I haven’t seen in over 10 months.
The reasons are quite obvious. But the less obvious reason is that he’s been traveling out-of-state.
We caught up over lunch. We ate at a place called Dan & John’s Wings.
If you’re in New York City, I highly recommend eating there at least once. Their chicken wings are addictively delicious.
Anyways, that’s besides the point.
One of the things I found out from my friend is that he started his own matchmaking agency.
And no, it’s not what you most likely think it is. It’s not one of ... (read more)

287. Bending the Unwritten Rules of Email Marketing
January 15, 2021
For the past few days, I’ve been working on completing my 2021 strategy, specifically the part where I revamp my welcome sequence.
As of right now, it’s just one simple welcome email that has the link to the sample chapters of my book.
But now I’m thinking of making some of the following changes:
1. Convert and condense all the chapters in the PDF file into a sequence of emails.
Instead of letting my new email subscribers wait for the welcome email, download the PDF, open it, and finally read its content, why not just give the content straight to them by putting them in the... (read more)

288. Tip on How to Have Engaging Conversations With Almost Anyone
January 14, 2021
One thing I noticed from watching TV shows is this: Most of the time, each season, or even each episode, has two plots. Take the show I talked about last week, Phineas and Ferb. Each episode has two plots. One where Phineas and Ferb build something extraordinary and their sister tries to bust them. The other one where it follows another spy adventure of Perry the Platypus trying to take down Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Another example, A crime show I’ve been watching, Grimm, has a similar structure. One plot, which is the crime case itself, which is different in each episode, t... (read more)

289. Tales from the Online Marketing Crypt #9 Why Cheap Websites Are More Expensive Than You Think
January 14, 2021
Tales from the Online Marketing Crypt – Vol. 9
Your Website May Be Under-Performing Because It’s Underpaid
During one of my usual jaunts on Facebook, I came across a post where someone was making the argument to invest properly in a website, and they listed all the reasons to do so.
Heck, I could have written that post myself! ?
And as per usual, then came many responses that all pretty much said the same thing: “But what if I have no money?” Ah yes, the money objection is a big one. And a valid one too! So valid that it’s something every parent has said to us when we were... (read more)

290. This Burger King Manager Went Above and Beyond to Give His Customers the Best Experience
January 13, 2021
One last trip to the customer service memory bank.
Let’s talk about an example of what good customer service looks like.
To do that, we need to go all the way back to 2015, the year I got my first job in Burger King.
For one year, I worked with three managers. The general manager and two assistant managers. But since I mainly worked during the later days, I didn’t work with the general manager as much so technically, I mainly worked with just two.
Let me tell you, these two had management styles that were as different as they could get.
One of them, we’ll call him Jay... (read more)

291. The Tale of Paypal's Brilliant Online Customer Service Quality
January 12, 2021
Here’s a pleasant customer service story I pulled out of my memory bank.
I have two Paypal accounts.
One that I currently use. And there’s another one that I created probably years back, but I completely forgot about.
Apparently, the older account was created under my email address, but also under my brother’s personal information. So he asked me to delete the account.
The only problem was, there was one dollar in the account for some reason and we were unable to delete the account until the money was transferred out. And for some reason, I couldn’t connect our bank account... (read more)

293. A Tale From the Restaurant Service Crypt
January 11, 2021
I personally don’t go to high-end restaurants often. As far as I remember, there have only been two instances where I did go. The first time was at a steakhouse where they served wagyu beef. Fun fact, that was also the first time I ate wagyu beef. I still remember the texture of the meat as if I ate it last week. It was a very interesting dining experience indeed. The second time was more recent. My friend and I went to a steakhouse not so far from where I live. It definitely wasn’t as expensive as the first steakhouse I went to, but it was still a high-end restaurant in my eyes... (read more)

294. Email Copywriting Lesson From a Professional Musician
January 08, 2021
Earlier today, I caught up with a good business friend of mine.
We haven’t spoken since May so we had quite a lot to talk about.
Most of the conversation was, of course, business related matters. But towards the end, it transitioned into the topic of music.
After all, it was a conversation about music that began our relationship.
Being the professional musician that he is, among other things, I asked him for some advice as I make progress on building my music making skills.
The main takeaways?
1. Let your feelings guide you.
2. Be open minded.
3. Trust y... (read more)

295. Is This Even Real Life Anymore?
January 07, 2021
This world becomes more and more interesting as the days go by.
Apparently, yesterday I heard that the US Capitol was raided by none other than Trump supporters to protest against Joe Biden’s presidential victory.
I expected something like this to happen in a videogame, but never in the ‘real world.’
What a great way to start the new year, am I right?
Now, I personally don’t care who becomes president. If Trump had gotten reelected, fine. But Biden ended up winning, which is also cool with me.
But if there’s one thing I have to say, it’s that Trump did a pretty great j... (read more)

296. Marketing Lesson From One of the Most Unusual Entrepreneurs In Existence
January 06, 2021
Elon Musk has always been a fascinating entrepreneur to me.
I recently found out that he gave his baby a very unusual name,
X AE A-XII Musk.
It may look like he and his wife came up with that name just by having a cat type on the keyboard, but there’s a specific meaning to it.
The X represents a variable. AE means love or artificial intelligence in elven spelling. And A-XII is the name of Musk and his wife’s favorite plane.
But that’s not all.
If you look at all the Tesla models he released, the letters and number spell S-3-X-Y.
His Model S has a starting pri... (read more)

For videogames to be people’s full time career.
To see a 16 year old win a huge tournament and become a multimillionaire overnight.

298. Email Copywriting Tip From Phineas and Ferb
January 04, 2021
One of my favorite childhood shows was Phineas and Ferb.
It’s a Disney show about two boys on summer vacation, and figuring out how to make their days fun.
It’s a show that I never got tired of, even though each episode was extremely predictable.
Here’s what I mean.
Like all TV shows, almost all the episodes follow the exact same structure, and it goes a little something like this:
• The show starts off with the two main characters starting another summer vacation day.
• A few minutes into the episode, an idea pops up in Phineas’ head and says one of his famous on... (read more)

300. The Harry Potter Secret Question You Must Always Ask Yourself When You Write Emails
January 01, 2021
I spent parts of my last few days of 2020 watching the Harry Potter movie series with some friends who’ve never watched them before. So far, we’ve finished the first three movies: The Sorcerer’s Stone, The Chamber of Secrets, and The Prisoner of Azkaban. It feels great to go through the entire series again, watching everything from my all-time favorites scenes to the ones I’ve forgotten. Speaking of films, one of my friends sometimes asks me to watch film analysis videos with her. And being the curious George that I am, I agree to do so. So naturally, I start paying more attenti...
