The difficult part comes when you are faced with countless brands and models of riflescopes with no clue on how to make comparisons. This situation is even worse when you get to the point of using your brand new scope. It is important to know how your scope functions in order to derive the best satisfaction.
The first step is to identify the function for which you require the services of a scope. If your hunting range falls within the 50 – 75 yards range, then a lower power scope will get the job done for you. If, however, you intend to utilize it for distances topping 200 yards, then the key is to go for a high power scope that will bring your target much closer to within a good aiming distance. Many hunting scenarios are catered for by the 3x – 9x riflescope. Simply put, a 3x magnification means that the target will look three times bigger than how it would to your naked eye and so forth. A target that would look 5inches tall to your naked eye would look 15inches tall when seen through the sight of the scope. Higher magnification will bring the target even closer and make it much clearer.
A riflescope also has a number of components which are:
1. The reticle: - this is denoted by a (+) sign and the center point is where you need to align with your target. Some reticles are marked with mil dots which allow you to make adjustments for conditions that might affect accuracy such as wind. 2. Eyepiece:- this houses the ocular lens 3. Ocular lens:- it is the lens which is closer to your eye 4. Eye relief: - this refers to the distance that exists between the ocular lens and your eye as you look into the scope. The bigger this distance is the better that scope. 5. Eye bell:- this is what holds the eyepiece 6. Objective lens: - this is the lens that is furthest from your eye and is located at the other end of the scope. 7. Power ring:- is what you use to adjust your magnification 8. Elevation adjustments:- up/down 9. Windage adjustments:- left/right
Better buying decisions can be made by knowing these elements and the differences that are associated with them.
