This Russian archipelago just seems to keep on giving, as you can discover for yourself when you embark on one of the Arctic holiday cruises we offer. Day 10 Friday. This morning, for the first time during this expedition, we woke to cloudy, overcast skies, but at least it wasn't foggy. We were anchored off Rubini Rock on Hooker Island, home to thousands of seabirds, where we watched Brünnich's guillemots, kittiwakes and little auks vying for space on narro... (read more)

9. Polar Bear Numbers Seen Declining A Third From Arctic Sea Ice Melt
December 13, 2016

Rising temperatures that melt sea ice in the Arctic will probably reduce the polar bear population by a third over the next few decades, and the same warming trend is likely to worsen the decline of wild reindeer, scientists said on Monday. The new findings by university and government researchers were presented as part of a panel discussion about climate impacts on wildlife during a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco. The presentation was streamed live on the...... (read more)

10. Your Drive to the Airport Could Be Made Easy
October 23, 2016

Going on vacation is supposed to be an enjoyable and relaxing event. Unfortunately, getting to and from the airport when starting and ending your vacation can be the polar opposite. There are many issues that can arise on the way to the airport. Traffic is heavy, people are angry and in a hurry, and you don’t want to miss your flight. Why not make it significantly easier on yourself and use a Philadelphia airport shuttle service? You could take a cab or rent a car, but neither of those do much to alleviate the stress of driving in airport traffic. You could, instead, use a limo service a... (read more)

12. Study: Pluto 'Spray-painting' Poles of its Big Moon Charon
September 14, 2016

A new study finds that Pluto is “spray-painting” the red poles of its big moon Charon. The paint is actually Pluto's continually escaping atmosphere. Methane and other gases from Pluto end up coating Charon's frozen poles, which are so cold and where winters are so long that this buildup remains for decades. A chemical transformation, via solar radiation, turns the polar caps dark red. Planetary scientist Will Grundy of Lowell Observatory in Arizona bases his findings on...... (read more)

14. Giraffes Belong to Four Species, Not One: Study
September 08, 2016

All giraffes are not created the same. A new study finds that instead of just one species (and several subspecies) of the long-necked animal, there are four, with researchers saying that the genetic differences among the four kinds are similar to the differences between polar and brown bears. "We were extremely surprised, because the morphological and coat pattern differences between giraffe are limited," said Axel Janke, a geneticist at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and...... (read more)

15. Juno Space Probe Ready for July 4 Fireworks
June 30, 2016

The Juno space probe is still millions of kilometers and 18 days away from Jupiter, but on July 4, the spacecraft will fire its main engine for 35 minutes as it enters a polar orbit around the gas giant. The probe, which is the size of a basketball court, will skim the planet's clouds, eventually coming within 4,667 kilometers of Jupiter as it attempts to get a look under the massive planet’s thick cloud cover, hopefully leading to better insight on the planet’s “origins, structure, atmosphere and magnetosphere.” "At this time last year our New Horizon... 16. UN Human Rights Chief Warns Burundi May Explode Into Ethnic Violence
June 29, 2016

GENEVA— Burundi’s human rights record is under scrutiny at the U.N. Human Rights Council over the objections and anger of that country’s government. The council said it is alarmed at the rise in rights violations in Burundi since last year’s political crisis. It wants the violations to stop, because it fears an ethnic conflict with devastating consequences for all of central Africa. The United Nations and the government of Burundi have polar opposite views on what is happening in the country, a year after President Pierre Nkurunziza was elected to what his critics call ... May 06, 2016

LONDON — Boaty McBoatface had captured the public's fancy but British officials said Friday the country's newest polar research vessel will be christened Sir David Attenborough, in honor of the prominent naturalist and broadcaster. But all is not lost for Boaty McBoatface fans who had voted in favor of the unusual, and perhaps undignified, name by an overwhelming margin.   Science minister Jo Johnson said a submarine vessel that will support the crew and various research programs will be called Boaty McBoatface.   "The public provided some truly inspirational a... CARACAS— Venezuela's largest beer maker halted the last of its four production plants Friday in a spat with the government over access to foreign currency, threatening a shortage in a nation already hit by severe scarcities of food and other products. Empresas Polar, the largest private company in Venezuela, had warned it would end production on Friday because President Nicolas Maduro's socialist government was refusing to release dollars to import malted barley under strict exchange controls. 21. China Wants Ships to Use Faster Arctic Route Opened by Global Warming
April 20, 2016

BEIJING— China will encourage ships flying its flag to take the Northwest Passage via the Arctic Ocean, a route opened up by global warming, to cut travel times between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, a state-run newspaper said on Wednesday. China is increasingly active in the polar region, becoming one of the biggest mining investors in Greenland and agreeing a free trade deal with Iceland. In 2013, the Arctic Council admitted emerging powers China and India as observers. Shorter shipping routes across the Arctic Ocean would save Chinese companies time and money. For example, the jo... 22. Internet Names New Boat ‘Boaty McBoatface’
March 21, 2016

Asking the Internet to name a boat can yield some hilarious results. When scientists wanted to solicit the public’s help in naming the Britain's National Environment Research Council’s new polar research ship, the most popular name suggested is “RRS Boaty McBoatface.” The online poll, which opened Thursday, showed by Monday more than 27,000 people supported that name, that was 10 times more votes than “RRS Henry Worsley.” Worsley was a British explorer who died earlier this year. The $290 million, 420-foot ship, which is still being built, wi... (read more)

25. Ted Cruz: A Founding Father Returned?
December 26, 2015

If we want to know something about Biblical doctrine, sound theology or anything else about the nature and attributes of God we would not call our congressmen or senators. Our first recourse would be to call a theologian or preacher with a solid foundation in every aspect of conservative biblical doctrine. It is rare to find a politician who has a full knowledge of biblical principles and doctrine. It is just as hard to find a gospel preacher who is highly informed about every aspect of politics. Look no more – you have just found one. Before the title of this article leads you ... (read more)
