Building credibility is an important skill to learn. People are more likely to listen and act upon your advice or recommendations when you display a good level of credibility. A first impression is formed within the first 4 – 10 seconds of coming into contact with someone for the first time. To maximise your chances of impressing and gaining rapport with that person you must be aware of the 4 – 10 second rule. Your physical appearance and body language are the key to winning them over within those vital few seconds, giving you time to build credibility and trust. I will discuss the secrets of body language in my next article but for now I want to reveal the 7 steps required to build real credibility. Be Likeable – An obvious one I know but sometimes easy to overlook. No matter how good or bad your day may be going it is imperative that you greet your audience with a warm smile and appear friendly and approachable. Doing so will make you more trustworthy. Give Yourself Objections – Be prepared in your mind to answer any anticipated objections your audience may have. By indentifying them before hand you can bring them up in conversation before they have the chance to. You will instantly lower their guard by using this tip. Become A Master Of Articulation – Practice the way you speak to people. Read aloud famous speeches and get the feel of emotion that was put behind them. A clear and fluid speaker is perceived much higher. Reveal Your Specialized Knowledge – People generally respect well trained or higher positioned individuals. Don’t be afraid to let your audience know of your achievements, it’s another weapon to use to build your credibility. Use Facts And Evidence – Do your homework. Always have a good understanding of your topic and be prepared to offer references to where you have discovered your information. Putting the effort in here will prove that you really know your stuff. Be Light Hearted And Humorous – This needs to be done with caution but attempting to get your audience to laugh can have a big impact on their emotions. It helps to relax them and make them less defensive. It also helps them to relate to you more easily. Have Knowledge About Your Target Audience – Attempt to find out as much about your audience in advance of you meeting them as possible. Try to learn of any hobbies, special interests and family they may have. They will be blown away by your level of interest in them and will build a real connection between you. By working on these 7 principles before you meet anyone or any group of people you will have built a solid foundation on which to display your high levels of credibility.
