Unless there is a physiological problem, i.e. a paralyzed vocal cord, everyone has the ability to speak in different volume levels. My complaint with the soft-spoken is that they do not speak at a normal volume level. Notice what I just said. NORMAL. If you are soft-spoken, then you do not speak in a normal level of sound. There, I said it and I will say it again. Normal means that others can hear you in most situations. What you need to understand is that we, who have bigger voices, tire of straining to hear you. We tire of asking you to repeat yourself. If you have ever wondered why you are constantly being interrupted or ‘talked over,’ wonder no more. It is definitely not what you are saying. It is the fact that you are not being heard. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. - If you feel that your message, your words, your thoughts, and/or your opinions are of value, then you must speak with enough volume the 1st time you say it. Otherwise, you may not get a 2nd chance.
While learning how to increase your volume to a normal level takes some practice, it is well worth the effort. In the process, you will be retraining your inner ear to accept your increase in sound. At first your inner ear will revolt, believing that you are shouting. However, if you would: 1. record a TV broadcaster at a good listening level; 2. record your own voice in which you are speaking with more volume (keeping the microphone the same distance from the source of the sound of the professional and then your own voice); and 3. playback the recording, again at a comfortable listening level; I guarantee you will hear that you are not shouting. If you feel that you are unable to increase your volume correctly, you should consider voice training. When you use your chest cavity to power your sound, your volume will automatically increase. Your chest cavity is a huge amplifier and unfortunately, most people do not make use of this, the largest of their 5 resonating cavities. Once you hear the difference, however, you will be amazed by the increase in your volume, as well as the sound of your speaking voice. It will be deeper in pitch and warmer in quality. With life today more hectic than ever before, it is important to waste as little time as possible when it comes to your job, your career, or your business success. Repeating yourself is frustrating for both you and your listeners. Speak in a normal volume the 1st time and you can stop saying it again, and again, and again.
