Judaism is a religion and culture that has a noted history of oppression throughout history. There has been a large Jewish diaspora that has spread communities throughout the globe. Jewish communities can be found on virtually every continent in varying degrees. In South America, the largest Jewish community exists in Argentina. The Latin American nation was one of the stopping places for Jewish people who had been forced out of Spain in the mid-19th Century. Their history in the country has certainly had its ups and downs, and there are many different stories to tell from different individuals. In Argentina, there are between 180,000 and 300,000 individuals who identify as Jewish and participate in the Jewish community. They are largely concentrated in urban areas like Buenos Aires and Cordoba. A military junta in the 1970’s and 80’s was hostile to the Jewish community in a number of ways and forced many in the community to look for other homes either in Europe or North America. Life for the Jewish people in Argentina clearly hasn’t always been the best. They were one of the communities hit the hardest during the economic crisis that occurred in Argentina between 1999 and 2002. A large portion of the Jewish community found themselves in poverty-stricken conditions without a lot of recourse. During that time, it was easy for the Jewish community to sort of fall prey to dissolution. The network of Jewish-Argentinians had been largely severed because there was not enough money in the communities to continue their strong cultural ties. Joseph Farivar, a good Samaritan from Los Angeles, California, decided to do something about this loss of cultural identity and community. He visited the nation of Argentina and discovered the dire straits that the Jewish community had found itself in. Then, he pledged to help the community get back on its feet in a number of different ways. Farivar worked directly with the Jewish community, fostering ties among them and providing them with a financial boost. He was integral in helping the community rediscover its shared heritage and unique perspective on Argentinian life. His goal was to build a community network that gave Jewish-Argentinians a greater voice and a greater sense of purpose, even while they were economically downtrodden. Beyond that, Farivar had no real association with Argentina or the Jewish community. He simply saw a need, flew across the globe, and decided to map out a plan to help. Today, the Jewish community in Argentina is still making strides. Although their numbers have dipped since the 1960’s, the community is currently thriving as the world’s seventh-largest Jewish population. Part of the success of the Jewish community in urban areas in Argentina can be attributed to the strong network that was fostered by Joseph Farivar. Although he did not help the community achieve prominence, he did sort of set it in the right direction. Farivar’s generosity has been greatly appreciated by the Jewish community in Argentina along with Argentinians as a whole. His help has proved invaluable for those involved.
