An Automotive Electronics Product Company's Guide to PCB Layout for Thermal Vias |

Industry experts today are laying as much impetus on PCB layout as the architecture of a DSP chip. It has been found that with the help of vias, one is able to take out the heat from a die-attached-paddle (DAP) of integrated circuits. What the Experts Say? Experts recommend the use of more layers of solid ground or power planes that are directly connected with the heat source with multiple vias. This helps in reducing the operating temperatures significantly. By doing so, one is essentially establishing effective high current routes that will optimize the transfer of heat through convection. By using planes that are thermally conduction, enables the even spreading of heat hereby lowering the temperatures and maximizing the area used for transfer of heat to the atmosphere. Things to Remember • It is important to remember that much caution is required when you are trying extract the heat from a part with the help of a circuit board. • Remember that the guidelines provided in the datasheet are typically based on a single part making heat that sits on a standard board with specific dimensions. If you are using a number of hot components, you evidently cannot expect consistency in die temperatures for the part in question. This holds true even when the board id covered with an enclosure that is tight. • Make sure you invest in tools that help you identify the hot spots within the switching regulators. You will soon learn that a modern buck regulator will have significantly higher amounts of heat being emitted out of the catch diode than the conventional FET. This is because the diode has a 0.6 to 0.9 V across it and the modern FET comes with a much lower on-resistance, resulting in a minimal drop of voltage. • Remember that while these tools can give you an approximation with respect to thermal performance for a switching regulator, the reading is an estimation based on your layout and application. • It is also important to remember that vias don’t often work as well as you need them to. This is because the amount of copper in the ‘barrel’ is usually dependant on the fabricator in the circuit board. Which means thin plating is equal to lower transfer of heat. Most automotive electronic product companies will recommend that you fill the vias so that the heat really gets out. However, you must be prepared to bear the extra cost of doing so. Planning on many vias under the part is also an effective solution.Ask any Boxed Products and PCB Design Company they will say that using inner layers to get the heat out can be of limited advantage. Instead, consider using top-side and bottom-side copper pours that ensure high levels of effectiveness.
