May 15, 2015

Sports betting is often considered to be one of the most profitable hobbies, but pros know that making a living out of it is neither fast, nor easy. It takes years to master the art and science of predicting match results and there still is no guarantee that you will always be right. Sports, especially soccer, will always be unpredictable and this uncertainty could make or break your punting career. Most people imagine that once you have found a reliable platform to bet on and you have sufficient soccer notions, you will start getting rich in no time, but these are not the only ingredients in ... 2. What a punt is and how to punt
August 03, 2014

This is for those who are concerned simply to punt for pleasure (rather than learning a racing technique). There are people who will dogmatically tell you that they know an exact method. That may well be the case for racing. But for pleasure punting the fact is - it doesn't matter how you do it as along as it is reasonably efficient and does not soak you or your passengers. And if it can also have that certain elegance that the best punters show then why not? I have developed the method outlined here over some forty two years (250 miles last year) so it undeniably works. WHAT IS A PUNT? ... (read more)

3. How to punt - correctly
August 03, 2014

1) First things first - Standing on a punt It might seem scary at first, but don't be shy! Walk to the end of the punt and stand up on the deck. Whilst you may wobble, unless you have serious balance issues there really is no need to cling on to the edge! A good stance, is one that is wide, with bent knees, and with your rear foot slightly closer to your preferred punting side. 2) Become one with the punt The important thing with punting is to make yourself at home. Try gently rocking the punt with your feet to get a good feel for your new best friend. Like most friendships, pu... (read more)

5. How to punt
August 03, 2014

The theory: Pushing a boat with a stick; all you need to know for a succesful trip on the river Cam. Getting on a Punt: The person using the pole stands at the back of the boat (this is the end that is tied to the jetty). The punter should ideally board last - lay the pole on the jetty within easy reach of the punt - you can offer your passengers a supporting hand as they board with the cushions, strawberries and Pimms. Having boarded yourself, with the pole, untie the painter (posh word for rope), stand about two feet from the end facing the front of the boat, and holding the pole... (read more)

6. Taking a punt on the river in Cambridge
July 30, 2014

The Romans arrived in 43AD and recognised the attraction of the area. They reached there by river (the Cam, of course) and built a bridge, as so many have done since. This is also where so many people go punting. In 1209 a group of scholars, kicked out from Oxford, arrived at Cambridge and the famous university opened in 1284 when Peterhouse College was founded. Cambridge has gone from strength to strength ever since. A visit is memorable, which is why so many tourists roll up there each year. It is in the top three places to visit in England. July 30, 2014

Punts were originally cargo boats, used for fowling and angling – and were not introduced as pleasure crafts in Cambridge until Edwardian times. Since then however, they have become one of the favourite past-times of those on the River Cam – and iconic of a trip to Cambridge, which would be incomplete without going punting. That is of course, not counting on the winter and rain spoiling your fun! The most famous and popular route is from Jesus Green to the Mill Pond, which passes through the area known as The Backs. This affords some stunning views of the University lawns, bridges, and Ki... (read more)

8. Bridge hopping when punting
July 30, 2014

Cambridge has several splendid bridges, which can be observed from the vantage point of a punt (for a beautiful selection, including photographs, see here). Some adventurous souls, however, disdain mere idle observation, preferring a little danger, exercise and excitement with their punting (all those qualities normally absent from punting). Therefore, the "sport" of bridge-hopping was invented. The idea of bridge-hopping is to stand on the deck of the punt, grab the bridge as it passes overhead, then climb across it as quickly as possible, ideally dropping down onto the punt as it passes... 9. How to have the correct posture when punting
July 30, 2014

The first step in learning to punt is to find a reasonably quiet place in which to do it. If you try and take off straight from the mooring place on your first try, you’ll not only have less room to manoeuvre, but the captive audience at the punt-hire may proving disconcerting. Try getting a more experienced friend to punt you into midstream, and then have a go. Stand at the back of the punt, half-facing to the side (probably the right). Hold the pole vertically against the side of the punt (doesn't matter whether or not it's touching), and let it drop through your hands until it touches ... (read more)
