Mattresses are notoriously hard to shop for because of the amount of different kinds of mattresses available. Nowadays, there are so many different kinds of king size mattresses that it can get extremely confusing about which one will work best for you. Though there are few other purchases that cause more anxiety and stress than a mattress, here is a breakdown of each of the types of mattresses, what they do, and what they are best for. Innerspring Mattresses Innerspring mattresses are the most common mattresses around and used to be one of the only mattress options. This mattress is the common “springs” mattress which supports you with springs. They used to be pretty uncomfortable, but with the technology of today, they’ve quite surpassed their creaky, squeaky memories of yesteryear. There are many different innerspring mattresses on the market today, including pillow top mattresses, and mattresses that are much firmer. With these mattresses, you’ll want to make sure that all of the coils are individually closed and that the coil count is around 390. Any higher, according to webmd.com, and it won’t feel much different. These mattresses are best for all, but if you are overweight, this may support your weight better than the other mattress options. Memory Foam Memory foam is a very popular and new mattress that started with Tempur-pedic mattresses who specialize in this type of foam created for NASA crews to be comfortable during a rough landing. This type of material responds to weight and temperature and contours to the shape of your body to provide perfect support. This type of mattress is extremely popular because it releases pressure from your entire body and will absorb any movement made, making it very easy to sleep with someone who tosses and turns. Any type of sleeper (back, side, or belly) can get really comfortable on this type of mattress. The only problem with this mattress is that because it is temperature sensitive, you can get very hot on this kind of mattress. Latex Mattresses Latex mattresses are becoming increasingly popular for firm mattress choices because they offer a firm support that is similar to memory foam, but provide more support than comfort. Latex however is not for those who enjoy a pillow top mattress, but can help those who have back pain because it offers a great amount of support. Air Mattresses The most popular type of air mattress bed is the Sleep Number bed. With these beds, you can choose whether you want a firm mattress or a soft mattress, without imposing on your partners wishes. These types of mattresses are the most popular for couples who disagree on the type of mattress they would prefer. But don’t be scared off simply because it is an air mattress. Most look like normal mattresses and are covered with fluff on top to disguise it and make it an extremely comfortable mattress. Some of the less expensive mattresses however can act like a typical air mattress, and with this type of air mattress, you’ll want to make sure that you pump it up enough so that you won’t wake up uncomfortable. Adjustable Beds Lastly, adjustable beds are beds that can be adjusted and elevated at different angles. This is commonly used for people with sleep apnea (where breathing repeatedly starts and stops) and for people who struggle getting in and out of bed. This can also be useful for elderly people who are unable to move in and out of bed, but still want to enjoy sitting up. Most any kind of king size mattress can be used on this type of bed, except for a spring mattress, as they have a hard time handling the bending of the bed.
