Own a website and faced with the task of achieving high rankings in search engines? Well, there are a multitude of factors that go into creating a successful Search Engine Optimization (SEO) campaign. In fact, SEO practices change so rapidly that I would not advise you taking a crack at it yourself … instead, hire a consultant like Imagine That to take all of the guess work out of getting your site noticed by search engines. For the purpose of this article, though, I am not going to go into all the practices involved in a successful search engine marketing campaign – leave that to us – but, I do want to mention the importance of recreating/building your website to include a mobile site design for multiple screens. We refer to this as responsive web design. Kayla Knight, in her article, “Responsive Web Design: What It Is and How To Use It” states that responsive web design is the approach that suggests that design and development should respond to the user’s behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation. As the user switches from their laptop to iPad, the website should automatically switch to accommodate for resolution, image size and scripting abilities. In other words, the website should have the technology to automatically respond to the user’s preferences. This would eliminate the need for a different website design and development phase for each new gadget on the market. With its ever-changing algorithms, Google is now taking into consideration responsive web design practices when ranking websites. With such focus on usability, desktop browser dominance is dwindling and mobile device usage is taking over. Google has made it very clear that you will receive no love without a mobile website design for your users. Therefore, creating a user-friendly website that works well and fast across all devices, especially mobile phones and tablets, is a must! Now, you can just build a dedicated mobile version of your existing web design and just roll with that. At the bare minimum you must do this. In fact, 61% of customers who visit a mobile unfriendly site are likely to jump to a competitor’s website (Karim Temsamani at IABALM 2012 via IAB). But, this practice requires a tremendous amount of time and maintenance. Each time you make a change or addition to your site, you will need to duplicate these changes on your mobile site as well. With a responsive web design implementation, though, it takes all the guesswork out of maintaining your mobile site as changes/additions are automatically applied to your responsive design. If you would like to see how your website looks on different devices, check out this handy SEO Responsive Design Testing Tool from Jeffbullas.com. Responsive web design will help to keep users on your site. No more pinching screen sizes on your iPhone or tablet just to see all of your content … it will be entirely viewable no matter what device is being used. As you know by now, we are entering a new age of Web design and development with a multitude of options available, and far too many in the future to continue creating solutions for each screen size, device and new technology. Start now and create your website to be ready for this new age. Responsive web design, when used correctly, can improve the user experience by creating a great custom experience for everyone. And, that’s what we want from our website anyway, right? Help take the guesswork out of this process and schedule your free consultation with Imagine That so that we can help you to configure your site for the future of website usage. Also, make sure to check out one of our most recent responsive design projects with the I-70 Coalition at GOI70.com. Remember, every custom solution makes for a better user experience.
