A Culture Vulture's Guide to the Museums of Mallorca

Travel & Tourism
In addition to being a wonderful place to soak up the sun on holiday, Mallorca also has a rich history to explore. Ancient civilizations, historic conquest and occupation as well as a host of notable people throughout history who have called the island their home make it a fascinating place to visit for the history lover.

Once you’ve arrived at your accommodation in your Mallorca airport taxi, there are a number of wonderful museums you can visit. History buffs will find plenty to sate their appetite for learning about the past and we’ve picked out some of the best.

La Casa de Robert Graves

Renowned English poet, novelist and classicist Robert Graves made Deià, a beautiful mountainous area on the northern shores of the island, his home in 1929. Later, a great art scene and community of creatives sprung up around him. His house has been immaculately preserved and is now open to the public as a museum, which is dedicated to his life’s works. It is certainly worth a visit for admirers of classic 20th century English literature.

Es Baluard Contemporary Art Museum

Overlooking the marina in Palma, this museum and gallery showcases fantastic contemporary art works (from the 20th century onwards) in an impressive building that fuses modern chic architecture with the old city walls. Art forms from sculpture, to pencil sketching to landscape painting have all been displayed at this museum, including work from some of the most famous artists of the last century. Art lovers should definitely include Es Baluard on their ‘must-see’ list of attractions.

Jardins de Alfabia

This museum allows visitors an intriguing insight into the Arabic history of the island. Previously home to the Arabic Viceroy of Mallorca until the 13th century, the baroque-style house is surrounded by striking gardens that are well maintained to this day. Whilst the house showcases extravagant rooms used to entertain visitors, the gardens are lovely for a peaceful stroll in the sun. There is even a charming café, where visitors can cool off with a drink in the shade.

Bellver Castle

A visit to Mallorca is not complete without seeing Bellver Castle. As well as stunning views across the island from up high, the castle also has a wonderful museum enclosed within its walls, where it is possible to learn about Mallorca’s varied history up until the present day. There are particularly great exhibits focused on the conflict over the centuries between Moors and Christians, with noteworthy relics from the period.

How to Get There

Once your plane has landed in Mallorca, airport taxi services are probably the most convenient way to reach your accommodation. We certainly recommend booking a Mallorca airport taxi before your trip, as this reduces the stress and hassle of airport transfer. Whether you prefer the luxury of a private transfer with a personal driver, or the affordability of a shared airport shuttle, it is certainly best to book in advance.

True culture vultures will love exploring the best of the island’s museums, where there is a great deal to keep you interested and entertained whilst learning new things.
