There is no denying the charm of the delightful Alpine resort of St Anton. A million miles from the high rise, purpose-built ski resorts of France and Switzerland, this Austrian gem retains much of its authentic character, which is complemented perfectly by the warm hospitality of the locals. Whether you make a beeline for the quality five-star hotels or prefer the cosy, more relaxed nature of catered ski chalets, St Anton has plenty of luxury accommodation to choose from. Skiing in the Ski Arlberg is second to none and the modern lift system makes it possible to ski the adjoining areas of St Christoph, Zurs and Lech. Off the slopes, St Anton is just as impressive, offering a vibrant après-ski scene, and some exemplary fine dining restaurants. Here are two of our favourites: The Verwallstube Located 2085m above sea level, this little piece of gourmet heaven is the highest of its kind in Europe. It is perfect for anyone looking to add a little romance into their holiday. Here you can indulge in a five-star candlelit dinner, with all dishes designed by Matthias Weinhuber, a well-known local chef. There is something very magical about being high up in the mountains at night and, as the only background noise is a gentle piano, the ambiance here is enchanting. Favourite Dishes The fois gras, served with a beautiful accompaniment of plum and almonds, is a stand out dish here and as a main course, the bouillabaisse really has to be one of the best around. The Museum Restaurant This beautiful eatery does a very clever job of fusing ancient and modern with both its food and its decor. Just feet away from the ski runs, the refurbished mansion also houses a walk-through history of skiing. While the building might be old, the dishes have been created with a modern twist with many incorporating Austrian and international style recipes. The chef takes great care to use locally sourced ingredients and seasonal specialities where possible, and the result is a menu that is constantly changing and always imaginative. There are several dining rooms here, all equally relaxed and effortlessly elegant. This is a wonderful choice if you are looking for excellent service, incredible food and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Favourite Dishes The herb crusted saddle of lamb is a fabulous dish and, served with a rich cheese flavoured mountain polenta, it is an authentic one too. The apple strudel here is another classic that really shouldn’t be missed. Where to Stay For those winter holidaymakers who choose to stay in catered ski chalets, St Anton has so much choice. There are some excellent luxury chalets and there’s no need to worry about catering every night for yourselves as there are some wonderful fine dining restaurants too.
