Snack Like a Scotsman on Your Next Scottish Cruise

Travel & Tourism
Scotland is a place jam-packed with unique and delicious traditional foods, but while we know that the locals love meat-filled stews for main and a strong whisky to wash it down, the country’s favourite snacks are a little bit of a mystery.

For the best opportunity to try the region’s top treats, heading off on a Scottish cruise will deliver them to you on a platter. With this kind of relaxing mode of travel, you can tour the country knowing you’ll be visiting all the best spots over the course of one single trip!

Here are some of the snacks you should make sure to get your hands on during your visit to the highlands…

Tablet

Those with a sweet tooth definitely won’t be complaining about this one – because foods don’t come much sweeter than Scottish tablet! You’ll be able to find this delicacy in most corner shops, supermarkets and sweet stores in the area, but be warned: you’ll be tempted to buy a lot more than you need! A couple of bites is probably quite enough sugar to last you for the duration of your Scottish cruise…

Potato Scones

Contrary to their name, these snacks aren’t potatoes or scones. Although they’re made using potatoes, they’re flat, bread-like and traditionally cut into triangles. You’ll usually find these ‘tattie scones’ served alongside other components of an English breakfast, however they’re just as good on their own, smothered in butter or marmite. Delicious!

Shortbread

If you haven’t quite had enough of the sweet stuff, your next taste temptation should be a traditional box of shortbread fingers, a classic biscuit usually washed down with a cup of strong tea or coffee. You might enjoy a couple of these treats while sitting outside on your hotel barge as you watch the beautiful scenery drift by. What better way is there to enjoy an afternoon on board a Scottish cruise?

Arran Cheese

Back to the savouries now, for a snack that’s perfect practically any time of day. This unique tasting cheese comes from a small Scottish farm near Brodick and has a variety of different flavours, from oak smoked to garlic and black peppercorn. Enjoy at lunchtime with some grapes and oatcakes or wait until sunset for a glass of wine and a slice or two.

Travel Scotland

One of the best ways to see a host of natural and cultural beauty of this wonderful country is to travel by boat on a luxury Scottish cruise. Book with a specialist tour provider and you can be sure that you’re seeing the best of the best, travelling with likeminded travellers and enjoying the comforts of well-equipped accommodation.

You’d better work up an appetite though, because you’re in for a real treat on your visit to the highlands! Taste all these traditional treats during your journey and you’ll feel not only full of food, but culture as well!
