The Ultimate Romantic Road Trip: Germany's Romantische Strasse

Travel & Tourism
Taking a road trip is one of the best ways to experience Europe. Whether you’re on an empowering solo adventure or travelling with friends or a partner, hiring a car - as long as you stay covered by car rental excess insurance - gives you the freedom to design your own route and a real sense of independence.

Germany’s Romantische Strasse, covering 285 miles between Munich and Frankfurt, is a picturesque drive with loads to see along the way. Driving along this route feels like travelling back in time, as you pass quaint Bavarian villages, Gothic cathedral spires and fairytale castles nestled into the mountains.

A 3-day Itinerary Along the Romantische Strasse

Day 1

From Munich, head down towards Füssen, where the main attraction is the unmissable Neuschwanstein Castle, the real-life inspiration behind Disney’s iconic Sleeping Beauty castle. With its 19th-century Romanesque spires set against a stunning mountain backdrop, it really does seem to come straight from the pages of a fairytale. If you’re after fewer crowds, Hohenschwangau Castle, an equally interesting if not quite as beautiful castle, is just across the valley.

Day 2

Next, the Romantische Strasse meanders up to Augsburg, Bavaria’s oldest city. Stop here to stroll down the Maximilianstrasse and grab a bite to eat, and check out paintings by Hans Holbein the Elder in the Gothic church of Dom St. Maria. You can also take a tour of the Fuggerei, a Roman Catholic housing complex for the poor built in the 16th century, which still serves as subsidised housing today.

After Augsburg, spend the night in the medieval village of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, where the half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and market square are incredibly picturesque. Hopefully you’ll arrive in time to catch the free walking tour of the town at sunset.

Day 3

Tear yourself away from Rothenburg and drive up to Würzburg, a famous wine-growing town just outside Frankfurt. An 18th-century baroque palace is the focal point, but there are plenty of other regal castles nestled among the rolling vineyard-covered hills. Make sure to sample a glass (or several) of the top-quality local Riesling - unless, of course, you’re planning to continue to the historic city of Frankfurt, where you can round off your trip with a visit to the Museum of Natural History or enjoy a little nightlife in the Sachsenhausen district.

Before You Go

Should anything unexpected happen on your road trip, car rental excess insurance will stop you incurring extra expenses. After all, a road trip should be the adventure of a lifetime, giving you the freedom to explore wherever you want. Knowing you have car rental excess insurance already in place will give you the peace of mind to drive without worries.

If you’re inspired to experience all the highlights of beautiful Bavaria on Europe’s most romantic route, remember that you don’t have to fit this trip into three days. One of the beauties of self-drive holidays is that you can take as much time as you want, detour to different villages and castles, or linger in one place as long as you please.

Author Plate Sam Walker is a specialist insurance expert at LowerHire, a company that offers low-cost single trip and annual multi-trip car rental excess insurance policies. Travellers can rest easy knowing they will be fully protected against any hidden hire car costs and look forward to a stress-free rental experience.
