Preparing the Kids for a Luxury Chalet Ski Trip

Travel & Tourism
Travelling with children to a ski resort can be daunting, especially if this will be your first time taking your family mountainside. While the comfort of a luxury chalet will undoubtedly ease some concerns, parents will still want to prepare themselves and the little ones for the skiing experience.

Here is our top advice for taking children on a luxury chalet skiing holiday this winter.

Practice in a Snow Dome

It’s a good idea to visit a snow dome in advance of your trip. Rather than throwing the kids in at the deep end and expecting them to take to the slopes straight away, book them in on a couple of lessons on artificial snow closer to home.

The lessons in a snow dome tend to be cheaper than at a resort, and the kids will quickly get a feel for their skis. Learning the basics and building up their confidence before your luxury chalet getaway will make the holiday more enjoyable for the whole family.

Book into Lessons

Research the ski schools operating in the resort, and don’t just go with the biggest name or cheapest option. Having smaller class sizes and better English will mean more dedicated attention for your kids. They’ll make better progress and friends too, so it’s well worth the investment.

Reserve their places early if possible, ideally at the same time you book the rest of your luxury chalet ski holiday. In the school holiday weeks, spots tend to get booked up fast.

Top tip: It’s also a great idea to bring a GoPro or another camera and film them skiing. Kids love seeing themselves skiing and will be encouraged to do even better.

Build in Breaks

When you pick them up from ski school, make sure to spend some time relaxing together. Their lessons will probably have tired them out – being a beginner is pretty exhausting – and having a breather will go a long way towards making them excited to start skiing again later in the afternoon.

Perhaps have some lunch in one of the cafes along the pistes, or go and play on the sledges and toboggans for a while. You could even have a good old-fashioned snowball fight or make a snowman!

Dress in Lots of Layers

Keeping warm is essential. Make sure to layer the kids up with:

Thermals on the top and bottom Inner and outer gloves Thick socks A woolly hat, helmet and goggles Ski jackets and trousers

Of course, having lots of layers will stop them getting cold. But it will also make it easier to adjust their body temperature if they get too hot when you stop off to have lunch. Other things to remember to bring with you are sunscreen, water, and plenty of snacks.

The most important thing of all: have fun! Be patient with them and keep your expectations realistic. You shouldn’t expect them to be skiing for hours on end, and you’ll need to be prepared to be flexible with your plans depending on how they’re feeling on the day.

When searching for the best advice on location and luxury chalet ski holiday deals, using a reputable ski company is highly recommended. That way, you can rest assured of the quality of service and know that you’ll get the most out of your luxury chalet experience.
