Along with a cross reliquary (a shrine/receptacle for holy relics) from the fourteenth century, one of the most important exhibits is the fifteenth century stucco by Nanni di Bartolo, of the Madonna and Child. Castello di Verrazzano This gorgeous hilltop castle dates back to Etruscan times, later becoming a Roman settlement. It enjoys a long and prolific heritage of winemaking, with references to its vineyards mentioned as far back as 1150. In the seventh century it came under the ownership of the Verrazzano family (and was the birthplace of the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano), followed by the Ridolfis and, latterly, the Cappellinis, who are responsible for its complete restoration. Today the magnificent 225-hectare wine estate hosts tours of the cellars and gardens and the views over the surrounding countryside are nothing short of breathtaking.
