The Lowdown on What to Expect on Cooking Classes in Italy

Art and Culture,Travel & Tourism
Have you ever wanted to make pasta dough from scratch? Or, perhaps you’d like to know how to make your gnocchi pillowy soft just like you have when eating out in an Italian restaurant. If this is you, maybe you should consider cooking classes in Italy. When on your next holiday, why not book onto one of the many cookery focussed tours on offer? We guarantee that you will be able to learn these skills and so many more, and all while enjoying famous local products, sampling delicious wines and gleaning expert information from the local chefs.

What is Involved in Cookery Classes in Italy

There are so many options when it comes to this kind of tour. You can indeed spend a whole week learning to cook while staying at a farmhouse and experiencing the farm to food ethos that this country is so famous for, but if time is limited you can achieve a lot in even just a few hours.

A typical tour that involves cooking offers you the chance to create a meal from start to finish. Some even include a trip to the local market, which is always lots of fun and an experience in itself. If you get the chance to go to the wonderful market in Florence, you will rub shoulders with the locals doing their daily shopping and be able to get a feel for how the people’s idea about local and seasonal ingredients still dominates every meal in an Italian household. You can buy everything at this market and the ingredients are all fresh and of the highest quality.

Normally cooking classes in Italy are hosted at farmhouses, which provide an authentic venue for such an experience. Again, you may get the chance to head out to the garden to select herbs or pick other ingredients that you will be using in the dishes you are about to create. One thing is for sure, on any tour that advertises a cookery class you will be expected to join in, so be ready to roll up your sleeves and get involved! Of course, chefs are on hand to talk you through the dishes you are about to create and teach you the all important techniques, and we assure you that once you get going, you will enjoy every moment.

Depending on where your cookery classes in Italy are based, your chef will have selected recipes that are local, but most will include a pasta course. Every region in Italy loves pasta and although shapes of the noodle might change, the concept of pasta as a vessel for deliciousness doesn't. If you’re in Tuscany, for example, you may create Pappardelle alla Lepre (pasta with hare sauce) or Pasta con Salsiccia (with sausage). You will be taught how to make pasta by hand using the freshest of eggs.

Starters will no doubt include a bruschetta with bread and home produced olive oil, best enjoyed with a glass of local wine. The main course will usually be roast meat and perhaps roasted rosemary potatoes. Tiramisu is a classic dessert and, while it appears simple, takes real skill to accomplish, so if you get the chance to make this one, listen up.

The best bit of any of the cookery classes in Italy is the eating, which is made even more special when you know you have created the meal yourself. For any budding chef looking to book a tour that focuses on learning the culinary techniques of the Italians, it is recommended to book with a reputable operator based in Italy. You are then guaranteed local guides and an experience that has been hand picked by the experts.

Buon appetito!
