Sitting atop the rugged coastline of the Ligurian Riviera, also known as the Italian Riviera, the Cinque Terre is a group of five beautiful coastal towns. The five Cinque Terre towns, namely Monterosso al Mare, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore, and Vernazza, are famous for their breath-taking scenery and typically Italian character. The towns are easily accessible and only a short distance from Florence, thereby making them perfect day trip destinations. Below is some more information on each of these incredible locations. Monterosso al Mare Starting with the biggest of the towns, Monterosso is as historically interesting as it is beautiful. It is divided into two sections, the ‘old’ and the ‘new’, by a tunnel. The new section is home to many of Monterosso’s finest hotels and restaurants, and contains what is widely considered the best beach in the area. Fegina beach is the perfect spot to relax under the Lingurian sun. At the end of this sandy stretch you will spot the famous statue of Neptune. This impressive 14-metre high landmark sits above the ocean and is well worth a visit. The narrow medieval streets of the old section are lined with quaint shops and cafés, which make for wonderful spots to sit back and relax. Also located in the old town are the ruins of the old castle; these impressive ruins will leave you in awe of the history of Monterosso. Corniglia Corniglia sits on a precipice 100m above the sea. Whilst it’s location makes this town trickier to access than the others, its traditional feel makes it unmissable. Stunning pastel-coloured houses decorate the landscape. You will surely be charmed by the character of this small town as you walk along its narrow alleyways, stopping for a bite to eat in one of the local eateries. Fewer tourists visit this area due to its placement and lack of beach, however those willing to brave the steep staircase will be able to enjoy a relaxed and refreshing dip in the ocean below. Corniglia may be small but there are plenty of architectural attractions for visitors to admire - particularly the Oratorio dei Disciplinati di Santa Caterina, with its breathtaking painted ceiling. Manarola A favourite amongst many, Manarola is beautiful and lively with plenty of cafés and restaurants in the Piazza Papa Innocenzo IV. Here you can enjoy the local wine, called Sciacchetra; the grapes used to make this delicious tipple are harvested directly from the terraces of vineyards that surround the area. Those looking for history will certainly enjoy a visit to Manarola, which is the most ancient of the five Cinque Terre towns. The Oratorio dei Disciplinati, with its ancient bell tower, is situated very close to the piazza and is a wonderful spot to take in some architectural beauty. Riomaggiore Riomaggiore is the southernmost of the five Cinque Terre towns and is usually the first spot people visiting the area will see. The famous Via dell’Amore (“Lover’s Lane”) path begins here and will lead you to Manarola in just 20 minutes. The path is named as such due to its beautiful views and romantic atmosphere. This town is very picturesque, with the stark contrast of colourful houses against lush green vineyards making a striking statement. The main street, Via Colombo, has lots of wonderful restaurants and spots to enjoy the local food and drink. Riomaggiore is divided into three main areas: the fisherman’s district, the train station and the town centre. These sections are connected by tunnels, which are the easiest way to get around. Vernazza Often considered the most beautiful of the five Cinque Terre towns, Vernazza is surrounded by gorgeous ocean views. Many visitors travel to and from the town via boat, which offers an unmatched view of the scenery. Although Vernazza is popular with tourists, traffic is only permitted on one day a week meaning it maintains its peaceful and authentic Lingurian feel. There are two beautiful beaches, and many people enjoy jumping into the sea from the rocks to cool off. Those who enjoy architecture will enjoy Vernazza’s offerings, including Doria Castle, the Roman Church of St. Margaret of Antioch and Nostra Signora di Reggio. Each of the five villages has its own charm and beauty, so it just remains for you to visit and choose your personal favourite!
