Those heading to the south coast of Sri Lanka have much to see and do. Epitomising what an island paradise should be, the sun drenched beaches, soft golden sands, aquamarine ocean waters and magical sunsets make for the perfect backdrop in which to enjoy an intimate couple's getaway or a fun family holiday. One of the most popular destinations along the south coast is Bentota. Situated around 60 kms from Colombo, which is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, this idyllic area is well known for the thrilling water sport activities it offers. However, there is much more than pristine beaches to enjoy in the area and approximately 10 kms from Bentota, you will find a fascinating attraction known as the Brief Garden. Spanning an area of around 5 acres, this garden was created by Major Bevis Bawa who was in Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon) with the British Army. Once home to a rubber plantation, the area was transformed into a scenic and tranquil garden masterpiece, which Bawa worked on till his passing away in 1992. While many may not be that familiar with Bevis Bawa, his brother Geoffery Bawa was renowned for being a leading architect in both local and international spheres. Dating back to 1929, the Brief Garden is the perfect place to unwind and relax amidst scenic natural landscapes and lush green lawns. As you explore the garden you will come across a variety of different features which enhance the site's beauty; fascinating garden sculptures, alcoves, bowers, terraces covered in shade and ponds have been placed in various spots in the garden. Do not forget to climb up to the hilltop lookout point and survey the picturesque scenery that unfolds around you. Another attraction here is the house that Bevis Bawa used as his residence. Visitors have the chance of not only viewing the antique furniture in the house, but also several intriguing paintings and sculptures, some of them creations by Bevis Bawa, who was also a sculptor. Travellers to the south of coast of Sri Lanka in search of Bentota hotels from which to enjoy the sun, sand and surf can stay at Bentota Beach Hotel. A great base from which to explore the region, this Bentota beach hotel also has its own spa. Google+
