Thanks to the huge range of wonderful accommodation options that includes hotels, self-catered and catered chalets, La Plagne has become a firm favourite among avid mountain sports enthusiasts. Of course the skiing is pretty good too, especially now that the area has been linked to Les Arcs and offers more than 400km of excellent downhill options. Few visitors, however, actually realise that beyond the doors of their hotels or catered chalets, La Plagne has more than just amazing slopes to discover. This wonderful little resort is creating itself a reputation as a centre for a host of other incredible winter activities, with so much you can do beyond skiing and boarding. Bobsleigh Home to the only bobsleigh and skeleton track in France, the resort has a strong connection to this deep rooted tradition. Even before this place was a ski resort, people would bobsleigh on the road and forge out runs that would become tracks. In 1992, when the Winter Olympics was held in Albertville, La Plagne was designated the host for the bobsleigh discipline. Since then, special machines have been made that allow the general public to have a go down the Olympic track. After training, the track is open to visitors wanting to experience this once in a lifetime ride, which will see you travelling at speeds of up to 100km/hour. Remember to book your descent in advance as it is a popular activity. Horse-drawn Fun A more sedate ride can be enjoyed as you’re pulled along on skis by horses. You can have a go at this whatever level skier you are, so it is a great family activity. Open to try from mid-December to mid- April, this is a wonderful way to get off the beaten track and enjoy the wilder side of the Alpine countryside. Dog-sledding Another group activity, dog-sledding, is lots of fun. On your own or with your family, you can sit on reindeer hides in a sled pulled by a pack of 7-10 dogs. You will have a musher driving you of course, so you can sit back, relax and marvel at the wonderful scenery. While this is not recommended for children under two, it is still something that can be enjoyed by most. Snowmobile A fabulous experience that won’t eat into any of your skiing time, snowmobiling takes place when the slopes have closed. On your own or in pairs you traverse the wide open spaces on the slopes and tracks; exploring the area as the sun sets and when everything is quiet is a joy. Rest assured that the machines are easy to drive and once you’ve got the hang of it on the test circuit, you’re ready to set off with your guide to discover the resorts of La Plagne with just your headlights to guide you. These are by no means the limit of the non-skiing activities on offer when you leave the cosiness of your catered chalets. La Plagne has the option for ice-karting, quad-biking and much more. You can even watch the ice climbing world cup, which involves the participants taking on the frozen waterfall at Champagny. Have a go yourself if you have a head for heights!
