Everest Base Camp Trek: General Information

Travel & Tourism
Everest base camp trek is a well-known adventure mountain trekking between nature enthusiasts from all around the world. Many people are familiar with Mt. Everest because it is the highest mountain in the world but might not find helpful information about visiting its base camp.

Everest base camp trek trails remain inside the Sagarmatha national park which is a UNESCO natural heritage site. The first day and the last few hours walk are not inside the national park during the trip. There are multiple entry points to reach the Everest base camp but, we are talking about the Lukla Everest base camp route because it is a common trekking plan that most Everest base camp trekkers are following.

A short adventurous scenic flight drops you at the Lukla airport departing from Kathmandu. After that, you start walking to Phakding on the same day. A night in Phakding will be your first-night stay on the Everest base camp trek. Then, you head ahead towards the Everest base camp taking a week more crossing Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorakshep. You will have two rest days on the way up but they won’t be your proper rest days. You will have some altitude practice hike to Everest view hotel from Namche and Nangkar-Tsang hill from Dingboche.

There is no place for a night stay at the base camp so, you drop off all your stuff in Gorakshep take a hike to EBC then back to Gorakshep. It is a 2-3 hours walk one way from Gorakshep to the Everest base camp. Everest base camp trek is not a circuit trek so, you will trek back through the same way that you hiked up. About 2 hours hike early in the morning on the 9th day is for Kalapatthar. You can see eye-captivating panoramic views of the Everest Himalayas and the nearest look of Mt. Everest from this hill station.

After having a delicious breakfast in Gorakshep, you start walking downwards to Pheriche passing Lobuche and Thukla. Then 2 more long treks bring you to Lukla from Pheriche. Every Everest base camp trekkers spend the last night in Lukla to catch a flight back to Kathmandu. Normally, flights are operating in the morning from Lukla on a clear day with no wind. But if it is a shiny day with no wind, we can still see some flights during the day during the months of the autumn season.

Best Time for Everest Base Camp Trek

It is a smart decision to choose the best time for the Everest base camp trek. You have a wonderful time if you select the right time to go there. The months from autumn and spring are highly recommended to trek to the Everest base camp. Although, until mid-September in autumn and after mid-May in spring might not be perfect timing. December to February is doable with warm trekking equipment. December provides one of the best views compared to the other months of the year. Likewise, Summer rain is not fun for the Everest base camp trek. It will be poor visibility and slippery trails with lots of raindrops during the months of the summer season. June to August is considered summer in Nepal.

Accommodation and Other Acces in Everest Base Camp Trek

There are plenty of tea houses during the Everest base camp trek but not at the base camp. You need to hike from Gorakshep and back for last night's stay. If you are like to sleep at the base camp, you need to take a tent or hire over there but sleeping at the base camp for the trekkers may not be a good idea because of the high elevation. Climbers can sleep there because they are well acclimatized.

The guest houses are from basic common rooms with twin beds to luxurious in the Everest base camp trek. You need to share a bathroom with others if you have a common room. The bathroom is not outside the building even if it is sharing one. Common rooms are charged around 5 USD per night if you have dinner and breakfast at the same guesthouse where you stay. You also have luxury accommodation in the Everest base camp trek but these are expensive even more than a cost of a five-star hotel in Kathmandu. Common and normal attached bath accommodation does not include a hot shower so, you need to pay extra for your shower during the trek.

Every guesthouse is hiring a well-trained cook to prepare food for their guest. You will have a food menu with western and local dishes. Cooked foods are hygienic and delicious but it is recommended to stay with vegetarian food at least on the way up. You can buy bottled mineral water on the Everest base camp trek but the price goes high as you visit the higher areas. The cost of a bottle of water may go up to 500 NPR from 100 NPR. You can buy boiled water which is competitive cheaper than mineral water but they use a kerosene stove to boil and it may smell sometimes. Alternatively, you can use purification or sterilizer before drinking the normal tap water but, it is better to buy mineral water for a few days up in the higher areas. It may be dust contaminated around the place like in Lobuche and Gorakshep.

For the connection, you can use the Nepalese SIM cards to use the phone and internet. NCELL and NTC are service providers in the Everest region. You can buy a top-up internet card from the Everest link but you need to be closer to the router access to use the internet.

People with not enough time for a regular Everest base camp trek still can do this trek. It is possible to finish in one week to days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu. You will start the trek by flying on a plane to Lukla and finish with a fly out to Kathmandu on a helicopter from Gorakshep.

One of the best options for those people who can't trek on the higher elevation or do not have enough time for a hiking trip, but are interested to reach the Everest base camp is the Everest base camp helicopter tour. This luxurious scenic flight trip takes you directly to the EBC from Kathmandu within an hour with several landings on stunning viewpoints. It is a group sharing trip, but you can fly privately if you have 5 people or do not want to share with others.
