In this article we look at NVQ Courses and see how they can be beneficial to businesses as part of their training strategy. What is a National Vocational QualificationNational Vocational Qualifications, or NVQ’s are a work focused or vocational qualification where, rather than spending a significant volume of time in a classroom, the bulk of a candidate’s work is assed in the workplace. Available in a huge range of subject areas across practically every business sector, NVQ qualifications are exceedingly flexible and can enable businesses to select the most relevant training possible for both their candidate and their industry. They can be tailored to provide the most appropriate academic level from introductory right through to postgraduate levels. How NVQ Training Works: Unlike traditional qualifications like GCSE’s or A Levels, NVQ’s are assessed as a series of "Outcomes" whereby a candidate is required to complete a number of work related tasks, keeping a record of which in a portfolio. For each NVQ, students must prove they can complete the set number of tasks in order to gain the qualification and instead of testing these outcomes via essays or exams, NVQ assessors collect ‘evidence’ showing that the student meets the requirements of each outcome in their day-to-day work. This could be through observing them at work, by looking at projects or reports they have completed at work, or through written statements submitted by the student. As this is assessed based on the student’s performance in the workplace, the course is constantly related back to the student’s own job role, meaning that students need less time away from their work to complete the course than they would when studying an equivalent academic course. This ongoing assessment can be flexible with NVQ assessors timing their visits to suit business hours and cause as little disruption as possible to the day-to-day running of your company. Once sufficient evidence has been collected to prove that the student has met all of the necessary outcomes, the entire portfolio is assessed and the NVQ is awarded. By offering formal training to your staff you can help to greatly improve both their aptitude for the job and their morale within your company by making them feel more valued. Providing them with an NVQ will not only be more unobtrusive than a more traditional form of classroom based teaching, but by actively helping your employees to gain a greater proficiency you can increase both productivity and efficiency, improving their performance within your business.
