226. Ohio Governor Signs 20-Week Abortion Ban, Vetoes Heartbeat Bill

Republican Gov. John Kasich signed a bill Tuesday imposing a 20-week abortion ban while vetoing stricter provisions in a separate measure that would have barred the procedure at the first detectable fetal heartbeat. Kasich acted on both proposals the same day they landed on his desk.   The so-called heartbeat bill would have prohibited most abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy — or before many women know they are pregnant....... Quadriplegia, mostly due to cervical spinal cord injury caused by traffic accidents, falls and violence, deprives patients of control of all their limbs. A handwritten and hand-illustrated volume of stories given by J.K. Rowling to the editor who launched her career sold at auction Tuesday for 368,750 pounds ($467,965).
